Although there hasn't been any real vocal opposition to the judges unanimously awarding a decision victory to Lyoto Machida over Gegard Mousasi in the main event (watch highlights here) of last night's (Sat., Feb. 15, 2014) UFC Fight Night 36 show on Fox Sports 1 from Arena Jaragua in Brazil, the bout was likely closer than the final scores -- 49-46, 50-45, and 50-45 -- indicate.
So let's take a look at the Fight Metric report, shall we?
First, striking:
Although Mousasi has Machida in volume in nearly every category, what jumps off the page is the fact that the majority of that is because "The Armenian Assassin" was working a stiff jab to the head all night long, especially in round five.
Still, the bout was fairly even in striking.
Next, grappling:
This is where Machida really pulled away, scoring with one takedown (to zero for Mousasi) and passes to half guard and back control. He wasn't credited with a submission attempt, but he dominated in this respect.
Finally, performance:
Easy peasy, Machida wins, even if it was closer than it seemed upon first viewing.
