Report: Clay Guida booked to fight Tatsuya Kawajiri at UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi

A new featherweight match-up has been added to UFC Fight Night 39 in Abu Dhabi, and it looks to be a doozy.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) has assembled an interesting featherweight match-up for its upcoming UFC Fight Night 39 event, scheduled for April 11, 2014 on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, as longtime veteran Clay Guida takes on Japanese import Tatsuya Kawajiri.

The bout was first reported by FightSportAsia.com in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Guida (30-14) is coming off a loss to Chad Mendes at UFC 164 (watch it here) where he was finished by strikes for the first time in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. "The Carpenter" has seen most of his action take place at lightweight, but now in a fairly new weight class, Guida looks to avoid a potential ZUFFA release after going 1-3 over his last four.

Kawajiri (33-7-2), on the other hand, has experienced something of a rebirth, as the PRIDE FC, ONE Fighting Championship (ONE FC) and Strikeforce veteran is currently riding a six-fight winning streak. The last loss he suffered was in 2011, coming via technical knockout against Gilbert Melendez.

The 35-year-old "Crusher" defeated Sean Soriano in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 34 last month in Singapore (details here.)

UFC Fight Night 39 will be headlined by a heavyweight showdown featuring hard-hitting grapplers Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Roy Nelson (details), and will likely stream on the promotion's new "Fight Pass" digital network.

Expect more bout announcements to this still-developing fight card in the coming weeks.
