The flyweights were in action on the main card of tonight's (Sat., Feb. 1, 2014) UFC 169: "Barao vs. Faber 2" pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, as chubby contender John Lineker took on rising star Ali Bagautinov.
For all the excitement of the Abel Trujillo knockout of Jamie Varner just one fight before, this one was the opposite. A quick takedown led to over three minutes of ground fighting, and some submission attempts in the form of heel hooks that were nowhere near being completed.
When the first round was over, you could hear crickets and cat calls in the arena.
The action heated up in the second when they spent the majority of the round standing. That had more to do with Lineker stuffing all of Bagautinov's takedowns -- a perfect five-for-five to that end -- but both had a measure of success on the feet.
The third round looked a whole lot like the second, though Bagautinov finally managed to earn a takedown. At the end, Lineker worked for a heel from the bottom but Ali stood up and waved to the crowd as the clock counted down.
Yeah.
Final scores from the judges: 29-28 across the board, all in favor of Bagautinov.
