Talk about a tough week.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight Brendan Schaub was pounded out by Travis Browne at the UFC 181 pay-per-view (PPV) event last weekend in Las Vegas, Nevada (highlights here), then had his friend Joe Rogan tell him to call it a career on his live podcast (more on that here).
The same place where "Big Brown" (via Bleacher Report) announced the loss of six of his sponsors.
"I make two times as much money on sponsors than I do on what the UFC pays me," he said. "Six of my sponsors have already bailed because the Reebok deal is going up."
The promotion has entered into a multi-year deal with sports and apparel giant Reebok (details), one that will outfit the entire roster with branded uniforms (along with a new pay structure). That means fighters are no longer allowed to display outside sponsors during fight week, effectively eliminating any and all prominent exposure.
And in most cases, any and all prominent income.
