Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos returns to mixed martial arts (MMA) this weekend (Sat., Dec. 13, 2014) with UFC on FOX 13 from inside U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona. After more than a year on the sidelines, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) will send former 265-pound titleholder Junior dos Santos back into the Octagon to reclaim his place atop the very short list of division contenders at UFC on FOX 13 from inside U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on Sat., Dec. 13, 2014.

The means to that end is a five-round main event against talented heavyweight up-and-comer Stipe Miocic, who could easily rocket his way up the divisional ladder with an upset win in "The Grand Canyon State."

Elsewhere on the UFC on FOX 13 fight card, Alistair Overeem looks to right the ship against fellow Dutch import Stefan Struve, while Nate Diaz tries to prove he's the only contender who matters in the crowded lightweight division by turning away surging Brazilian wunderkind Rafael dos Anjos.

265 lbs.: Junior dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic

Round 1: Junior lands an overhand right early. Miocic shoots in against the cage; he doesn't get him down, but presses him against the cage. Stipe tries a single-leg, no success. One minute in. Junior lands a knee on the break. Body shot by Junior. Miocic ducks a punch and shoots in. Junior stays up, eats some shots against the cage. Two minutes in. Jab exchange. Miocic shoots in again, JDS circles away. Good left hook from Junior. 3-2 by Miocic connects. Stipe moves him to the fence once again, then lands a good right hand. Two minutes to go.

Stipe right hand, Junior hook as JDS circles along the cage. 1-1-2 blocked for Junior. Overhand right connects. Lead uppercut lands for him. One minute to go. Miocic avoids a straight right. Hard right hook from Miocic, after which he takes Junior to the fence again. Junior has not fixed the problems that let Cain destroy him. Junior cracks him with a pair of left hooks, then another when Stipe tries to clinch. Bell, 10-9 Miocic.

Round 2: Miocic ducks a left hook, can't take him down. Junior flicks out a jab, eats a body kick and right straight. Miocic in on a low single. JDS with a couple hammerfists, as he sprawls on it. Now Junior pressing Stipe against the cage. Knee from Miocic before they split. One minute in. Lead left hook by Junior. Straight right misses, right hook lands. Miocic moves him to the fence and again lands a few as Junior circles out. Two minutes in. Junior fakes a level change, lands a left hook and eats a cross. Another cross by Stipe. Stipe moves him to the cage again. Junior is bleeding badly. Junior tries to separate, eats a right hand and lands one. Two minutes to go.

Junior pops Stipe with a left hook in a reversal of fortune. Back to the center. JDS body shot. Again, this time with the right. Stipe using his jab well. 3-2 by Junior. One minyte to go, huge right hand by Stipe as he clinches. Short elbow from Stipe. Stipe changes levels and takes Junior down. Junior locks up guard, eats a pair of elbows. Junior manages to stand, lands a knee to the body before the bell. 10-9 Miocic.

Round 3: The issue is that Junior has the same issues that plagued him against Cain: he backs straight up to the fence and gets jacked by punches when he tries to escape.

Junior jabs the body, Stpie with a good jab upstairs. Stipe shoots in, whacks Junior when he denies that takedown. Stipe completes a single-leg, but Junior wraps up the seatbelt to counter. Miocic gets back up. One minute in. Another hard right by Miocic. Brief clinch against the cage. Lead left hook from Junior. 1-2 by Junior. Overhand blocked. Junior pressing forward with body jabs. Two minutes in. Junior whiffs on a massive uppercut. Good right to the gut from Junior. Stipe is slowing down, it seems. Miocic overhand, but Junior drops him with a left hook. Miocic looks for a low single and eats hammerfists for his trouble. Junior gets his leg out, Stipe stands. Two minutes to go.

Hard lead right by Junior. Stipe tries another low single and is slow to get up when Junior limp legs out. Blood coming from Stipe's mouth; his jaw may be broken. Good body shot by Stipe. more body jabs by Junior. One minute to go. Good overhand right around the guard. Another overhand just misses. Stipe rushes after him, landing with the end of a right straight. Good body shot by Junior, then a whipping overhand right. Stipe backs away from a right hand to end the round. 10-9 Dos Santos.

Round 4: Lead left hook from Junior. Miocic body kick strays low. Brief pause in the action. Junior body shot, Stipe low kick. Miocic ducks a left hook and completes a takedown on the cage. Junior up instantly and avoids the left on the break. Junior with another straight to the body. JDS with a left hook. One minute in. Junior avoids a 1-2. Junior just misses on an overhand. Junior keeping up the body jabs, avoids a left hook. 1-1-2 by Junior. JDS weaves away from punches near the fence, gets clinched. Junior circles away. Junior misses with an uppercut. Junior lands a back elbow and completes an outside trip into Stipe's guard. One minute to go. Short ground-and-pound by Junior. Miocic looking for the switch, Junior elects to stand. Round 5: Jab exchange early. Good hook up top for Junior, then a 1-2 and straight downstairs. Stipe jabbing as well. Good right to the body from Junior. Overhand just misses, as does a Stipe cross. One minute in. Swatting overhand after Stipe tries a 1-2. Junior using a backfist to keep Stipe away near the cage. 1-2 by Stipe, JDS backfist. Miocic shoots, Junior stuffs it. Right to the body by Junior. Body shots by JDS after a left hook up top. Two minutes in. STipe lands a hard cross and left hook on the break. Junior continuing to target the body. Good right hand up top. Junior just misses with a right, then lands a 2-3. Good combination by Junior when Miocic looks to change levels. Two minutes to go.

Another straight right by Junior. Counter right by Miocic. 1-2 by Miocic. 3-2 by Stipe. Another right and another as he clinches Junior. JDS reverse position on the cage. They separate. 1-2 from Stipe. Junior stuffs a shot and presses him against the fence. One minute to go. Junior with a check hook and they trade right hands in the clinch. Junior takes  the strong position on the fence, eats two big shots on the break. Chopping right from Stipe, Junior left hook. They clinch again. Junior blasts him with a hard hook on the exit. Stipe tries to change levels and misses with an uppercut. Stipe clinches against the cage and Junior drills him with a knee to the body to end the fight. 10-9 Dos Santos; it all comes down to how they scored Round Four.

Round 1: Diaz with a lead-leg head kick attempt. Another head kick falls short. RDA low kick, then a flying front kick attempt. Another leg kick, then an overhand left for RDA. Leg kick again. One minute in. 1-2 from RDA. Low kick lands, Diaz tries to tie up. Knee on the exit from him. Overhand left inside by RDA. Low kick again. Both land 1-2s. Good leg kick from RDA. Two minutes in. Nate right hook, takes another leg kick. Good 1-2 by Diaz, then another. Nate checks a leg kick, lands a straight. RDA leg kick, Diaz 1-2. Diaz 1-2. RDA with a big leg kick that gets Diaz to change stances. Diaz tries a takedown, can't get it. Exchange inside. Two minutes to go.

RDA muscles Nate down, taking half guard. RDA left hand as Diaz gets butterfly guard. Nate moves to turtle, RDA drops punches. Nate rolls through to attack the leg. One minute to go. RDA working his knee out, does so and regains top position. GnP from RDA. North-south for Dos Anjos. Dos Anjos landing heavy GnP for the rest of the round. 10-9 Dos Anjos.

Round 2: RDA with a leg kick as Diaz punches. Now inside. Diaz 1-2. Glancing leg kick outside, head kick blocked. RDA low kick, Diaz tries to shoot and fails. Diaz switches to orthodox after taking another leg kick. RDA high kick blocked. RDA with yet another heavy low kick. One minute in. Again. Left straight connects. Now to the opposite leg. Diaz right hook. RDA head kick blocked. Nice counter straight from RDA. He changes levels and takes him down into half guard. Two minutes in. Nate is cut beside his right eye. Good elbow by RDA after Nate regains guard. More elbows. Dos Anjos is just tooling him right now. Nate gives up turtle to stand up, RDA drags him back down. Two minutes to go.

RDA dropping right hands as Nate tries to stand. Nate makes it to their feet and they separate. Two more big leg kicks by RDA. Diaz right hook, then the ref pauses it to look at the cut. They resume soon after. RDA body kick lands. Good leg kick. Diaz 1-2. One minute to go. Another 1-2 from Diaz, he takes another low kick. He's hobbling at this point. Another good low kick from RDA. Straight left up top by RDA. Dos Anjos tries a flying front kick and puts Diaz on his back. GnP from RDA as he takes side control. There's the bell; close to a 10-8, but 10-9 Dos Anjos. Complete domination so far.

Round 3: Diaz trying 1-2s, not landing. Another low kick by RDA, Nate switches stances in response. Diaz head kick blocked, RDA high kick glances off. Easy takedown for RDA into guard. One minute in. Hard elbows by Dos Anjos. More elbows land. RDA stands over him and drops a left hand. Half guard for RDA. Diaz regains guard, eating a punch and elbow to do so. RDA leg kicks on the prone Diaz. Two minutes in. Brief scramble, back to guard. Nate looking to set up a triangle, unable to do so. More punches by RDA. Good punches and elbows. Two minutes to go.

Hard elbow. RDA stands over him, misses with a right hand. Another hard elbow. RDA going body-head. One minute to go. Yet another heavy elbow. RDA continuing to pour on punishment. Diaz whining as he takes shots. Nate slapping RDA, Dos Anjos postures up and gives him a bigger slap. RDA goes Donkey Kong in the last seconds with ground and pound, then disdainfully tosses Nate's legs aside after the bell. Terrific performance by Rafael Dos Anjos. 10-9 Dos Anjos.

Round 1: Struve moving forward. No strikes half a minute in. Overeem with an oblique kick. Overeem moves into the clinch, taking Struve to the fence and landing a knee to the body. One minute in. Another knee from Alistair before Struve circles off. Struve front kick to the body. Good knee to the gut. Overeem overhand falls short. Alistair shoots in and wrangles Struve to the ground, landing in half butterfly. Two minutes in. Good right hand by Alistair. Another hard right, then one to the body. Another one; Struve having trouble controlling Overeem's posture. Overeem stands over Struve. Two minutes to go.

Struve looking to kick him off. Overeem kicks his leg. Overeem hops back into closed guard. Now back to his feet. Leg kick on the prone Struve. Alistair stands over Struve and starts dropping bombs. One minute to go. Alistair landing some heavy shots and Struve goes out. Much-needed win for Overeem.

Round 1: Quick exchange, glancing right lands for Gonzaga. Mitrione right hook. Straight left lands for him. STraight right stumbles Mitrione, he stays on his feet. One minute in. Mitrione straight left. Right hook connects. He backpedals away from a flurry. Gonzaga with a straight right. Big left hook drops Gonzaga. Gonzaga falls to his knees as Mitrione looks to pound him out. Mitrione gets up like he thinks it's over, then smashes him with a right hand when he realizes it's not, prompting the ref to step in.

Final result: Mitrione def. Gonzaga by TKO (punches)

115 lbs.: Claudia Gadelha vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Round 1: Jedrzejczyk will be referred to as "JJ" for the remainder of this play-by-play because like hell I'm typing that any more than I have to.

1-2 by Gadelha, counters by JJ on the next attack. Good exchange inside. Short right hand by JJ in an exchange. One minute in. Gadelha shoots in and presses her against the fence, using double unders. Knees from both as they move about the cage. Gadelha brings her down against another fence, stepping into half guard. Two minutes in. Gadelha locks up an arm-triangle, JJ gets out of it. JJ looking to use the cage to stand. Two minutes to go.

She stands up, Gadelha still attached to her. Knee to the body from JJ. Gadelha with a knee of her own, after which she changes levels. JJ still fighting off the takedown. One minute to go. JJ pressing Gadelha against the cage, lands a short elbow. They separate. Teeps by JJ. BIG uppercut by JJ drops Gadelha. Gadelha gets her wits back and JJ stands over her open guard until the bell. 10-9 Jedrzejczyk.

Round 2: Body shot from JJ. Gadelha steps into the clinch and changes levels, taking her down into side control. JJ scoots to the fence. She's looking to stand as Gadelha looks to take the back. One minute in. Gadelha unable to get the back, settles for pressing her against the fence. Both land knees to the body. Gadelha changes levels, can't get it and JJ reverses position. They separate and return to the center. Good left hook from JJ and they trade body knees. Two minutes in. Good body shot from JJ. Left straight lands for her. 1-2 as well. 1-2 by Gadelha. Two minutes to go.

Four-punch combo by JJ. Short right by Gadelha, they clinch and knee the body. Gadelha straight, JJ uppercut. Gadelha shoots in, nearly completing it before JJ gets underhooks. She continues driving and takes her down, landing in JJ's closed guard. One minute to go. JJ again moving to the fence. She manages to stand, Gadelha still attached. Gadelha brings her down once more before the bell. 10-9 Gadelha.

Round 3: Three-punch combo from JJ. Gadelha ties up and now she's bleeding from beside her eye. Looks like a clash of heads did it. Uppercut from JJ on the break. Gadelha continues advancing and they trade punches, both woman landing well. Gadelha hits an inside trip into guard. One minute in. JJ again scooting towards the fence. Gadelha lifts her and slams her down when she tries to stand. JJ on one knee, looking to stand. Gadelha snaps her back down, whacking her with hard right hands. Two minutes in. JJ stands, Gadelha gets her down again. JJ back to her feet quickly. Gadelha with another takedown, JJ looking to stand. Gadelha briefly looks for the arm triangle, settles for a pair of right hands. Two minutes to go.

Gadelha changes levels, JJ looks for underhooks. Takedown attempt denied. Good rights from Gadelha. One minute to go. JJ reverses position on the cage, lands a short elbow. Another. They jockey for position. Good right by JJ on the exit. Uppercut lands for her. Overhand right lands. Gadelha firing back, eats another right hand. Fight ends with a Gadelha body kick and she swings at JJ after the ref separates them. 10-9 Gadelha.

Final result: Jedrzejczyk def. Gadelha by split decision

125 lbs.: Willie Gates vs. John Moraga

Round 1: Gates opens with a leg kicks. Moraga low kick in response. Gates trying oblique kicks. He counters a leg kick with a 1-2. Moraga leg kick. One minute in. Kick exchange, left hook by Gates connects. Moraga back to the leg kicks. Body kick attempt, then a high kick comes up short. Another low kick and check hook. Two minutes in. Gates leg kick hits groin, no break taken by Moraga. Lead left hook lands for him, overhand falls short. Gates leg kick again hits groin, then he drops Moraga with a right as Moraga is looking to the ref. Gates jumps on his back and looks for the choke. Two minutes to go.

Moraga reverses to top position. Elbow by Moraga as Gates works for overhooks. One minute to go. Gates makes room and returns to his feet. Moraga body shot. Low kick lands for him. Next kick attempts come up short. Bell, 10-9 Gates.

Round 2: Gates high kick blocked. Leg kick lands for Moraga. Moraga high kick blocked. Leg kick lands for him. Moraga wades into the clinch, kneeing the body as he takes Gates to the fence. One minute in. Gates avoiding the takedown. Moraga fires a high kick on the exit that seems to land. Leg kick by Moraga. Two minutes in. Moraga shoots in, settles for taking Gates to the fence. Good elbow from Moraga. Knees to the body and legs. Two minutes to go.

Moraga with an elbow on the breaks, goes right back to the clinch. Moraga kneeing the legs, ref decides that isn't enough and splits them up. One minute to go. Gates with a teep and low kick. Moraga head kick blocked, Gates lands a side kick. Moraga changes levels and presses Gates against the fence when the latter rushes in. Moraga gets the bodylock, can't get him down. Round ends. 10-9 Moraga.

Round 3: Gates leg kick to start. Moraga moves into the clinch, flubs a throw but manages to return to the clinch, in on Gates' leg.  Moraga pressing Gates against the fence. One minute in. Good elbow by Moraga. Knees by Moraga on the exit, then an overhand right as he re-enters. Moraga in on the hips. Two minutes to go. Gates defending, looks for his own single-leg. Miraga grabs the front headlock and hits an inside trip. Moraga on top in half guard against the cage. Short elbows by Moraga connect, opening a cut. Gates gives up his back as Moraga drops shots. Two minutes to go.

Both hooks in for Moraga as he drops elbows. He flattens Gates out, Gates turns to mount and continues to eat elbows. Back to back mount, looking for the RNC. Moraga locks it up , earning the tap just inside the last minute.

Final result: Moraga def. Gates by submission (rear-naked choke)

170 lbs.: Joe Riggs vs. Ben Saunders

Round 1: Saunders head kick goes high. Riggs catches the next head kick, eats a right hook as he takes Ben to the cage. Riggs in on his hips and takes him down into guard. Saunders applies...something and Riggs taps.

Looks like Riggs hurt his neck on the takedown; he didn't hit the mat, but it looks like his head got jerked around. Weird.

Final result: Saunders def. Riggs by submission (injury)

155 lbs.: Drew Dober vs. Jamie Varner

Round 1: Good 2-3 from Varner right away. Another left hook to end a combo. Dober body kick blocked. Straight left lands for Dober and they tie up. One minute in. Dober with the bodylock. Varner tries a sacrifice throw, but is foiled by the cage and Dober lands on top, quickly taking mount. Varner gives up his back and Dober gets his arm across Varner's chin. It doesn't look like it's under the chin, but it's enough to get Varner to tap. Big upset by Dober.

Looks like Varner knocked himself out for a sec when he tried the throw.

Final result: Dober def. Varner by submission (rear-naked choke)

Brunson has reportedly suffered food poisoning and was forced to withdraw.

Round 1: Barberena on the front foot. Both land right hands near the fence. Ellenberger low kick. One minute in. Joe shoots in and completes a double against the fence. Joe pinning Barberena's arm behind his back as he sits on the cage. Barberena makes it back to his feet and lands a short elbow. Two minutes in. Body knee by Barberena before they split. Good straight left by Barberena, Ellenberger counters with a hard right hand and another takedown. Ellenberger looks to take his back, can't get it and presses him against the fence. Brief battling in the clinch. Two minutes to go.

Barberena clinches up against the fence. Joe reverses, eats a right hook on the break. Straight right from Joe. Forty-five seconds to go. Counter left by Ellenberger, Barberena stuffs a shot. Counter hook and overhand by Joe, Barberena left hook. Bell, 10-9 Ellenberger.

Round 2: Overhand right from Ellenberger and they engage in the clinch. Elbows from Bryan, haymakers from Joe before they make space. Barberena lands a good low kick. Joe tries a head kick. Joe seems tired. Low kick from Barberena. One minute in. Another low kick. Right hook inside while avoiding Joe's swings. Joe tries a flying knee, hits the body. Left hook by Bryan. Two minutes in. Both land their hooks, Ellenberger lands another as Bryan tries to press. Another leg kick by Barberena, overhand right by Joe. Barberena lands a good straight left. Two minutes to go.

Another pair of straight lefts land for Bryan. Ellenberger catches a body kick, can't get the takedown but trades in the clinch. One minute to go. They jockey for position before separating. Ellenberger whiffs on an overhand right. Bryan tries a front kick, eats a hook. Straight left by Barberena. High kick attempt and a right hook as he blitzes Joe to end the round. 10-9 Barberena.

Round 3: Barberena advances into the clinch, Ellenberger hits an inside trip. Barberena working towards the cage, looking to stand. He does so, Ellenberger stays on his hips. Browne elbows from Barberena. Good elbow from Joe before they split. One minute in. Right hook by Bryan. 2-3 lands and another right hook. Barberena assaulting him and drops him with a right hook. Barbarena on top in guard. Good shots from Barberena as Joe tries to defend with his legs. Two minutes in. Ellenberger gives up his back as he's turtling. Good knees to the body by Bryan knock Ellenberger to his back again. Good punches and elbows from Barberena. Ellenberger might be stopped soon. Two minutes to go.

Round 1: Counter uppercut lands for Whiteley. Both men seem fairly slow with their hands. Whiteley lands a pair of right hands. One minute in. Whiteley leg kick. Whiteley with a body shot and some good dirty boxing as they briefly clinch. Whiteley leg kick. Michaud with a lead uppercut as he clinches, both men land shots before they split. Two minutes in. Good leg kick by Whiteley. Michaud uppercut, clinch attempt denied. Whiteley body shot. Body kick, Michaud tries to clinch. Two minutes to go.

Michaud attempts a spinning crescent kick. Whiteley leg kick. Both land lefts, Whiteley ends the exchange with a left hook. Michaud with a cross inside, then he moves Whiteley to the fence. Whiteley kneeing the body and shoots in, is rebuffed by a front headlock. Michaud lands a right hook as Whiteley's coming in and adds a bit more punishment before scoring the takedown. One minute to go. Whiteley seated against the fence. He gives up his back escaping, manages to break the clinch. Round ends.10-9 Whiteley.

Round 2: Cejudo looking to counter. He catches a Kimura body kick and lands a few right hands. Quick clinch, Kimura may hav ecaught a finger in the eye. One minute in. Body kick lands for Cejudo. Round 1: Good teep from Birchak, then a Superman punch into a clinch takedown. Entwistle using butterfly guard. Birchak stands over him and Entwistle latches onto a heel hook. Birchark rolling through, dropping hammerfists and punches when he can. He runs out of room to roll and Entwistle cranks, Birchak resists for a bit, but soon taps frantically, holding his leg in pain.

Final result: Entwistle def. Birchak by submission (heel hook)
