Michelle Waterson vs. Herica Tiburcio

Round 1: Orange trunks and gray shirt for the Invicta debut of Tiburcio. Blue top and trunks for Waterson and she comes out to her daughter's suggested entrance song - "Let It Go." The referee is Chris Reed. Tiburcio catches a kick and takes Waterson down at 1:16. Waterson goes for an armbar, TIburcio tries to slam her way out of it, winds up on top delivering rights but loses position and Waterson gets back up. 2:20. Tiburcio gets a knee to the body as she puts Waterson against the fence. Waterson spins out at 3:04. Waterson gets a takedown and winds up in full mount with 90 seconds left. Tiburcio sweeps and Waterson goes for an armbar again. Tiburcio blocks it by putting a foot in Waterson's face and hangs on until the bell.

Round 2: Waterson has a swollen left eye as R2 gets underway. She's kicking hard but Tiburcio pushes her to the fence looking for a leg trip takedown. She momentarily gets Waterson's back but Waterson winds up on top as they go to the ground and is in half guard. 1:10. Waterson lands a few hammerfists as Tiburcio goes for a heel hook, then they both stand back up. 2:40. Tiburcio lands a knee before Waterson pulls guard and winds up with Tiburcio on top North-South. Now Tiburcio goes for a shoulder lock but loses it and Waterson sweeps to the top with a minute left. Tiburcio uses the cage to push her body off into position for an armbar but the bell saves Waterson at the end of R2.

Round 3: Tirburcio has a quick takedown to open R3 as Waterson threw (and landed) a big kick. Waterson pops free at 56 seconds but Tiburcio snatches the head and puts on a guillotine choke - WATERSON TAPS THE MAT WITH AUTHORITY AND THE FIGHT IS OVER.

Final result: Herica Tiburcio wins at 1:04 of R3 via guillotine choke to become the new atomweight champion.

Tonya Evinger vs. Cindy Dandois

Round 1: Black top and trunks for Dandois. Aquamarine top and black trunks for Evinger. Dandois is 5-1 and Evinger is 14-5. Our referee in charge is Joe Soliz. Evinger backs Dandois up quickly throwing overhand rights and then tries to get the back when Dandois looks to go to the ground, but ends up on top with Dandois just trying to hang onto her. Evinger has side control at 1:40 and gets the crucifix. She's pounding away with lefts and elbows. Dandois gives up her back trying to get away. Dandois gets flattened out at 2:55 and as Evinger unloads with lefts and rights she winds up in full mount. If Evinger could posture up and unload Soliz would stop the fight. Dandois goes for a heel hook and Evinger goes for one too but lets it go. Evinger spins to get her leg out with 30 seconds left. Evinger gets one last knee to the ribs right at the bell.

Round 2: Dandois' face is purple and black and her left eye is swollen as we open R2. Evinger blocks a takedown attempt and winds up taking the back again with a hook in. Dandois goes for a backdoor escape but Evinger punishes her with elbows. Dandois pops her head out but leaves an arm dangling as she does so - Evinger snatches it up and taps her opponent out.

Final result: Tonya Evinger finishes via armbar submission at 1:23 of the second round.

Roxanne Modafferi vs. Andrea Lee

Round 1: Andrea Lee is in a red hammer and sickle top with matching red trunks at 2-0. Modafferi has a black top and gray trunks on and is 15-11. Our referee in charge is Chris Reed. Modafferi is following up on her expressed wish to trade with Lee early, then getting a takedown twice before the 2 minute mark, unable to keep Lee down either time. A third one at 2:20 puts her on top in half guard. Lee gets her back to full guard for a bit and even goes for a submission but Modaferri takes half guard back and works for either wide or full mount as we move to the last minute. Lee sweeps at 4:13 as Modafferi tries to get a guillotine but can't. Lee hits her with a knee clean as they stand. A 10-9 round for Modafferi to open.

Round 2: Lee is working hard leg kicks to start R2. Modafferi's left leg is being punished. Lee takes a shin to the face and reels straight backward until Modafferi takes her down at 1:50. Her back is to the fence though so she's able to get to her feet although Modafferi gets another takedown at 2:30 by shifting her weight on an attempt by Lee. Lee scrambles and gets side control on the ground but Modafferi seems unconcerned as she works for a submission off her back. Lee blocks the attempts and gets full mount to land some elbows. Modafferi rolls and winds up on top again at 3:50. Modafferi blocked an attempt at a sweep right before the bell.

Round 3: Lee catches Modafferi with a left hook 40 seconds in but she shrugs it off. Body kick by Modafferi in response. Lee grabs a kick at 1:28 but lets it go. Modafferi bull rushes Lee into the fence and gets another takedown at 1:54. Modafferi stands up to avoid a submission attempt and in doing so spins her way to a full mount, on top raining down punishment with 2 minutes left. Modafferi takes her back at 3:32 as Lee rolls to avoid more damage. This is exactly what Modafferi needed to seal the decision or perhaps even get a late submission. With both hooks in Lee has nowhere to go. She's using elbows to soften Lee up and keeps trying to sneak the arm in for a RNC. Lee gets back to her feet and tries to piledrive Modafferi but it doesn't work. The judges will decide it.

Final result: 29-28, 28-29, 30-27 by split decision... for 'The Happy Warrior' Roxanne Modafferi.

DeAnna Bennett vs. Jennifer Maia

Round 1:  Bennett is in the black trunks and top, 5-0 as a pro. Maia is in the yellow/green trunks and top, 9-3-1 as a pro. Our referee in charge is Joe Soliz. Maia is pushing forward hard and both women are eager and willing to trade. Bennett clinches and throws a couple of hard knees, then drops levels looking for a takedown that Maia defends well. They push their way out at 2:23, throwing knees and strikes the whole way. Maia has to be careful to not get creamed with a counter strike. Bennett is tagging her with body kicks too. Bennett pushes Maia to the fence at 3:50. Maia turns her around and they break again at 4:34. Very energetic hard hitting R1 that ends with a late Bennett takedown.

Round 2: Another hard 30 seconds of strikes to open R2 before they trade dominant positions against the fence. Maia spins her way to a takedown in half guard, almost giving up her neck in the process, but she pops out and stands up at the 2 minute mark, landing an accidental knee on Bennett while grounded and apologizing immediately. Soliz doesn't take a point but stops the fight momentarily to make sure Bennett is okay. Maia continues to be the aggressor. Something hits the ground in the cage - a mouthpiece maybe? They wait while the ref picks it up. At this point the fight can go either way - it's far from decided.

Round 3: Bennett tries to control R3 early against the cage but Maia turns her around at 1:14. They reset at 1:40. Maia is trying to hit a home run with her right hand. 2:30. Bennett is getting a little wild with her striking. If this fight comes down to cage control, the judges will almost certainly score Maia the winner - but then again this is an event in Texas so anything goes. Bennett gets backed up by a hard knee late that nearly dropped her. We go to the judges.

Final result: DeAnna Bennett by unanimous decision of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28.

Peggy Morgan vs. Andria Wawro

Wawro is our second fighter tonight who didn't make weight. She's 3-1 and has on a red bodysuit and dark trunks for her bout tonight. "The Daywalker" Peggy Morgan is in black trunks and top and as always is a tall drink of water at 6'1". Our referee for tonight's fourth bout is Chris Reed.

Round 1: Both women circle and jab for the first minute. Wawro comes forward with an over-the-top right and Morgan finally makes her back off with a knee. 2 minutes gone. Whenever Wawro closes the distance she really puts the combos together. Morgan lands a couple more knees when they clinch and pushes Wawro into the fence. 3:30. Wawro turns her around with a minute to go and gets an elbow off before they break. Wawro is mixing in body strikes as we close R1. Wawro landed the better power shots but Morgan was getting stronger in the later half of R1 so it's a hard one to score.

Round 2: Morgan uses her size and weight to control Wawro against the fence for the first two minutes of R2. The ref gets bored with it though and makes them disengage and reset. It's to the benefit of Wawro as she's able to land her right hand effectively. This round is almost the exact opposite of the first - Morgan controlled early and Wawro came on strong in the second half. It would be entirely fair to have it one round apiece.

Round 3: Wawro landed a right hand that made an audible SMACK on TV about a minute in, causing Mauro Ranallo and Julie Kedzie to compliment her on her chin. Morgan puts her against the fence to avoid taking another one. Wawro tries to get a leg trip to no avail. Morgan is getting off some good right hands when she can free up her arm. Morgan really starts to pour it on at the 3 minute mark as she gets Wawro's back, and Wawro's face is turning into one big bruise. Wawro finally breaks free with 90 seconds to go. Blood is trickling down Wawro's cheek. Wawro tries to turn it up in the final 30 seconds but we go to the judges for a potential split decision.

Final result: Peggy Morgan via unanimous decision - 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

Alexa Grasso vs. Alida Gray

Purple trunks and white shirt for the 4-1 Gray. The 5-0 Grasso comes out in all black to "Paper Planes" by M.I.A. with a 5-0 record and 3 wins in under a minute. Our referee in charge for tonight's third bout is Joe Soliz.

Round 1: Grasso unloads with a hard body kick early. Gray tries to stay out of range but Grasso's reach has her opponent hurt 1:10 into the first. Gray tries to clinchto slow her down and manages to get off a few good shots against the fence, then Grasso drops her with a right and Soliz steps in a few seconds later at 1:47 to make Grasso 6-0 - but Gray doesn't agree. the big cut over her left eye says otherwise. Gray was face down turtled up. It was a good call.

Final result: 1:47 of R1 for the winner by TKO - Alexa Grasso.

Jinh Yu Frey vs. Cassie Robb

Robb is in green trunks and a black top, and is looking for her first Invicta win at 0-2. Frey is one of two fighters who didn't make weight on tonight's card, forfeiting 25% of her purse for coming in at 106.25. She's got on blue trunks and a blue top, and sports a 2-1 record. Our referee in charge is Chris Reed.

Round 1: Robb and Frey tie up against the fence and Frey lands a knee as Robb tries to turn away. She keeps the body lock and lands another knee although Robb got in a couple of reverse elbows. I'm surprised Robb isn't being warned not to grab the frence. Frey gets the hooks in on a back mount which Robb tried and failed to stand up out of, and Frey sinks in a rear naked choke and taps her out unofficially at 2:36.

Final result: Jinh Yu Frey via submission (rear naked choke) at 2:36 of R1.

Rachael Ostovich vs. Evva Johnson

Johnson is in the light blue trunks and yellow shirt for her Invicta debut, 1-0 in her MMA career to date. Ostovich is in a Wonder Woman outfit head to toe - she was undefeated as an amateur but is 1-1 as a pro. Our ring announcer tonight is Joe Martinez and our referee for this opening flyweight bout is Joe Soliz.

Round 1: Ostovich is working leg kicks early but then eats a knee from the thai clinch. Ostovich sprawls and then tries to take Johnson's back but slides off. Johnson digs hard for a takedown against the fence and Ostovich blocks it. Johnson gets a takedown at 2:03 and takes the back looking for an armbar but overcommits - Ostovich slips out. Both women settle for standing strikes and Ostovich connects with a good combo when she finds the range. She lands an overhand right and when Johnson tries to clinch a short uppercut connects. Ostovich stuffs a late takedown attempt and winds up on top in guard. 10-9 Ostovich.

Round 2: Johnson has a little trickle of blood above her left eye as we start R2. She quickly puts Ostovich against the fence looking for a takedown but once again Ostovich winds up on top and lands a knee when Johnson stands up. She's back on top again at 0:56. Johnson goes for a heel hook and Soliz warns Ostovich to let go of the cage. She goes and starts pummeling Johnson with right hands from the back. She tries to flatten Johnson out and get an armbar but backs away at 2:02 to kick Johnson's legs. Johnson finally stands with 2 minutes left in the round. Ostovich with a beautiful judo throw at 3:43 and then she backs away again to stifle the submission game. Another awesome sweep at 4:40 as Johnson caught a kick and was going for a leg trip. Ostovich rolls to avoid a heel hook. 10-9 Ostovich.

Round 3: Ostovich continues to pop Johnson as she plods forward toward her opponent. Ostovich misses by a millimeter with a spinning backfist. Johnson shoots for a takedown at 1:07 and eats some elbows. Johnson gets the takedown but Ostovich winds up on top immediately, and backs away at 1:55 to force a reset. Johnson tries to climb on Ostovich's back at 2:56 as she was going for a single leg. She gets one hook in but can't sneak the right leg in. She loses the other hook but then Ostovich tries to stand and that lets Johnson get the other one in. Ostovich defends well until the bell but that was the only round that unquestionably went to Johnson.

Final result: 29-28 Johnson, 29-28 Ostovich and 29-28 for the split decision winner - Rachael Ostovich.
