Both on the outside looking in on the Top 10 Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight rankings, Matt Mitrione and Gabriel Gonzaga collided last night (Dec. 13, 2014) at UFC on FOX 13 to inch closer to a top spot.
It didn't take long for Mitrione to separate himself from the competition -- and "Napao" from consciousness -- inside U.S. Airways Center in Phoenix, Ariz., scoring a first round knockout finish thanks to a short left cross and then numerous follow-up head bouncers (read full fight recap here).
The last one seemed unnecessary, but referee Herb Dean didn't give Mitrione much of a choice because he failed to intervene. Nonetheless, it earned "Meathead" an extra $50,000 in bonus money (see the award winners here) for "Knockout of the Night" and inched him one step closer to a bigger future fight against stiffer opposition.
No good deed inside the Octagon goes unpunished.
