The main card of tonight's (Sat., Dec. 13, 2014) UFC on Fox 13: Dos Santos vs. Miocic event at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona kicked off with Matt Mitrione hoping to continue a string of first round knockout victories against Gabriel Gonzaga, himself looking to recover from a decision loss earlier this year.
Two heavyweights who love to stand and bang should = fireworks, right?
Yep!
Gonzaga appeared to strike first, scoring what looked to be a knockdown but upon replay may have been something far less damaging: He stepped on Mitrione's foot. Not long after, the Brazilian came rushing in and "Meathead" drilled him with a hard counter punch that put Gonzaga down.
Referee Herb Dean was slow to step in, creating some confusion at the finish. It led to Gonzaga taking another hard punch to the chin to ensure Mitrione's victory.
That makes three first round knockouts in a row.
Impressed by his performance?
