Francisco Rivera set for surgery to repair cracked retina following Urijah Faber eye poke at UFC 181

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Well, that sucks.

Francisco Rivera is set to hit the surgery table to repair a cracked retina and bruise in his left eye after Uriah Faber accidentally poked it during their bantamweight bout at UFC 181 (video highlights here), which went down last weekend (Dec. 6, 2014) at UFC 181 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

His text to Sherdog:

"I have a crack in my retina and a bruise in my eye -- need to get laser eye surgery to stop it from spreading."

Rivera suffered the injury in the second round of his tussle with "The California Kid," which headlined the preliminary portion of the pay-per-view (PPV) event.

Moments after the unfortunate mishap, Faber sunk in a bulldog choke to put an end to the bout, much to the dismay of fans in attendance.

The loss, unfortunately, was Rivera's second straight after coming up short on the judges' scorecards at UFC 173 against Takeya Mizugaki. Both Faber and Rivera were keen on a rematch, but Francisco's upcoming surgery will likely delay those plans -- as well as his return to action -- for the foreseeable future.

After the bout, Rivera revealed that he had plans on appealing the controversial loss to Faber.
