The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 20 was back on FOX Sports 1 last night (Weds., Nov. 19, 2014) as the elimination fights continued on episode nine with No. 6-ranked Felice Herrig (Team Pettis) taking on No. 14-ranked Randa Markos (also Team Pettis).
We get a late start because of some ridiculous college basketball game that had five seconds left on the clock at 9:59 p.m, ET and did not end until 10:10 p.m. because of fouls, time outs, and every other protracted form of collegiate procrastination.
Moving on...
Back at the TUF house, the booze makes an appearance. Bec Rawlings and Angela Magana get shit-faced and have themselves a slumber party, much to the chagrin of Tecia Torres, who can't get her beauty sleep. That's problematic for her because she's still in the competition.
The drunks are not.
Team Pettis is sending seven fighters to the quarterfinals, so teammates will now be facing off against one another. Rose Namajunas is the lone survivor from Team Melendez. As such, "Showtime" won't be taking sides and instead splits up his coaching staff.
First up is Felice Herrig vs. Randa Markos.
But first we have to get through the coaches challenge and instead of a physical challenge -- because of Pettis and his bum knee -- UFC President Dana White holds a trivia contest, straight-up Jeopardy! style, emceed by veteran voice of the Octagon Bruce Buffer.
And uh, yeah ... Melendez by landslide.
Team Melendez gets $1500 per fighter and "El Nino" bankrolls $10,000. Not too shabby.
We head back to the gym with Markos getting some work in and she expects a tough fight; however, this is the same fighter who opened the season by upsetting No. 3-ranked Torres. She also wants to train as much as she can and doesn't want to stick to the split schedule Team Pettis voted on to keep opponents separated.
Naturally, that goes over like a lead balloon.
Particularly with Carla Esparza, who doesn't understand why they bother with team meetings if "cowards" will just sneak behind everyone else's back to whine to the coaches. Herrig confronts Markos later that night and puts her on blast for the shadiness.
Then it gets heated the next morning when Markos boards the van to the gym -- against orders.
This act of treason makes Herrig want to punish her when they scrap later in the show. Jessica Penne predicts Felice will steamroll Markos. Back at the house, Esparza and Herrig play patty-cake and make jokes about Randa. I guess producers need to kill airtime before the fight.
Does that mean we get a finish?
During the post-weigh-ins staredown, Felice blows a bubble in Randa's face -- who slaps it away. Joanne Calderwood says Herrig is not as mentally strong as Markos and expects that to become obvious during the fight. Felice, meanwhile, insists Randa was "quivering and cowering."
Time to find out who's right.
Quarterfinal fight No. 1: Felice Herrig vs. Randa Markos
Round 1: Quick feeling out process on the feet and they lock up in the center of the cage. Herrig pushes her to the fence but Markos reverses. They grind away at each other looking to better their positions and Markos fails on her first takedown attempt, instead getting stuck on bottom. She quickly works her way back up to her feet and pushes Herrig into the fence. Markos with an ugly headlock-type-hip toss that she turns into a brutal armbar.
Final result: Randa Markos def. Felice Herrig via submission (armbar)
After the fight, Herrig says she won't be a sore loser, though Markos and Esparza have some harsh words for one another before heading to the locker room.
