Bellator 131 took place last night (Sat., Nov. 15, 2014) from Valley View Casino Center in San Diego, Calif., featuring a main event between former high-profile Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veterans, Tito Ortiz vs. Stephan Bonnar, on Spike TV.
It was a sad showcase (read full fight recap here), with Ortiz taking an anti-climactic split decision win after three slow and sloppy rounds.
Meanwhile, in other action, Bellator 131 served up a solid co-main event between Will Brooks and Michael Chandler, who collided for the Eddie Alvarez-vacated Lightweight championship. It was an exciting back-and-forth scrap for 3.5 rounds until Brooks connected with a solid right hand off a scramble that had a woozy Chandler asking for, "Timeout."
It was bizarre (see .gif here).
Perhaps the most memorable moment of the evening came when striking specialists, Joe Schilling and Melvin Manhoef, met inside the center of the cage and traded haymakers with reckless abandon. After a difficult first round trying to keep "No Mercy" at bay, "Stitch 'Em Up" connected with a savage right-left combination that had the ferocious Dutchman out cold before his head even hit the mat.
Amazing (see .gif here).
Mike Richman stopped Nam Phan via technical knockout less than one minute into round one, while "King"
Muhammed Lawal needed about 10 extra minutes to do the same to Joe Vedepo to kick-off the main card action.
