The action was slow early, with Werdum opening things up with a low kick that Hunt shrugged off. Interestingly enough, the Brazilian seemed content to strike at distance as opposed to shooting in for a takedown.
Hunt found the mark with a hard overhand right that planted Werdum, but he let his foe recover without rushing in to finish the job. Unsurprisingly, "Vai Cavalo" shot in for his first takedown not long after.
It failed.
Hunt came in hard looking for a punch but Werdum may have baited him into taking him down so he could work from his back. Sure enough, he immediately went to work with what is widely considered the highest level Brazilian jiu-jitsu in mixed martial arts.
For his part, the "Super Samoan" survived sitting in Fabricio's full guard and managed to hop back to his feet after a few minutes in a dangerous position.
Once there, he landed a hard uppercut that appeared to daze Werdum, who failed on another couple lame takedown attempts.
The round came to a close with Werdum flailing a kick.
