UFC 180: Dennis Bermudez says win over Ricardo Lamas '1000 percent' warrants a title shot

Frankie Edgar, Cub Swanson, and Conor Mcgregor will likely have something to say about that.

Having too many title contenders isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Or is it?

That's the current predicament Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) matchmakers are facing in the featherweight division, as the top of the list (see it) is suddenly crowded with eager fighters ready and qualified to fight for the strap.

Among them is Dennis Bermudez, who currently sits at the No. 7 spot and looks to improve his position by defeating Ricardo Lamas at this weekend's (Sat., Nov. 15, 2014) UFC 180 pay-per-view (PPV) event in Mexico City, Mexico.

With a win -- which would mark his eighth straight -- "Menace" believes he should be able to "Bully" his way to a title shot, as he recently told UFC.com.

"1000 percent I believe a win over Lamas should earn me a title shot. The only fighters who have more consecutive wins than I do are champions and two of them are from New York. Give me a chance to join those guys."

As far as his fight against Lamas, Bermudez expects a toe-to-toe scrap, as both men have the habit of pushing the pace.

"Lamas and I are similar fighters. We both go in, hold the center of the Octagon and push a good pace. We both mix up our striking and wrestling well, but I feel like I'm a little bit better in all areas. The goal is to go in there, bring a super-hard pace and make the guy really question if he wants to be in there. I'm going to be in his face for 15 minutes, and over that time, my goal is to really make him think about quitting. I want to give him a reason to do that."

Of course, the aforementioned Swanson is likely to get next shot at the 145-pound champion, Jose Aldo, if he can manage to defeat Frankie Edgar at UFC Fight Night 57, which takes place on Nov. 22, 2014 inside Frank Erwin Center in Austin, Texas (more on that here).

After that, Conor McGregor is next in line if he can get through Dennis Siver when they lock horns at UFC Fight Night 59 event inside the TD Garden on Jan. 18, 2015 (details).

And if Edgar manages to beat Swanson, well then that just throws a monkey wrench in everything.
