Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, is scheduled to return to mixed martial arts (MMA) action after a one-year hiatus when he collides with Antonio Silva at UFC 184.
"UFC Tonight" revealed the pay-per-view (PPV) match up, which will take place inside Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Feb. 28, 2015, earlier this evening on FOX Sports 1.
Mir, 35, is currently mired in the worst slump of his professional MMA career, dropping four consecutive fights (Junior dos Santos, Daniel Cormier, Josh Barnett and Alistair Overeem) dating all the way back to 2012. In fact, Mir has not tasted victory since his arm-snapping "Submission of the Year" against Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira back at UFC 140 in Dec. 2011.
It's not a high-profile trilogy bout against Brock Lesnar (read more here), but "Bigfoot" will have to do ... for now.
Silva, 35, isn't necessarily hitting on all cylinders inside the Octagon, either, losing two of his last three appearances (Cain Velasquez and Andrei Arlovski) with a "No Contest" against Mark Hunt sandwiched between. His most recent win came against the aforementioned Overeem at UFC 156 back in Feb. 2013.
Something, clearly, will have to give once these two big men collide on what is turning out to be a sensational PPV offering.
UFC 184 features a championship doubleheader in the main- and co-main events, with Middleweight kingpin Chris Weidman leading the charge against top-ranked 185-pound contender, Vitor Belfort. Not to be outdone, Ronda Rousey will defend her 135-pound tiara against Cat Zingano in the supporting act.
