UFC featherweight Thiago Tavares runs for office, gets creamed in McGovern-esque landslide

Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight Thiago Tavares was fed up with the political system in Santa Catarina, Brazil, and decided to run for a seat in the State's Legislative Assembly. I don't want to suggest he got creamed, but Tavares made Bob Dole look like William the Conqueror.

From his official Instagram account (via MMA Fighting):

"I would like to thank the 7,980 people that showed that they are tired of the current politics and decided to give their votes for renovation and wanting change. I'm glad there is people like me who are tired of so much neglect, little or no support to social projects for our children and so much corruption in politics. Thank you for believing in my projects and my ideas."

Tavares finished with 7,980 votes and failed to crack the top 100 among state legislators.

All kidding aside, he should be commended for trying to initiate change, rather than just sitting on the couch and whining. Like me! The good news is, the Brazilian (19-5-1) has a successful mixed martial arts (MMA) career to fall back on and is 2-0 -- with two finishes -- since dropping to 145 pounds.

Rock the vote!
