UFC 179 results recap: Phil Davis calls out Anderson Silva, Internet laughs

I hear bizarre call outs are all the rage these days.

Matthew Stockman

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight contender Phil Davis took a convincing unanimous decision win over Glover Teixeira in the co-main event of UFC 179: "Aldo vs. Mendes 2" inside Maracanazinho Gymnasium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (replay here).

In doing so, he inched himself one step closer to a potential 205-pound title shot -- then grabbed the mic and inexplicably called for a fight against former middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

"I've beaten a lot of Brazilians and there's one Brazilian guy I'd like to face, and that's Anderson Silva."

Ordinarily, I would cite blows to the head for that sort of nonsensical call out, but "Mr. Wonderful" didn't take much damage from his Brazilian opponent, and later justified his remarks at the UFC 179 post-fight press conference (watch it), helpfully transcribed by MMA Junkie.

"All the questions around the open workout were centered around me being the ‘Brazilian Killer.' I don't know if I'd call myself a killer, but at the same time, that would complete my trifecta of Brazilian fighters. One of the absolute best Brazilian fighters, and one of the absolute best fighters there is. Why not? He's an amazing fighter."

Why not?

Well for starters, Silva operates a full weight class below the former NCAA Division-1 wrestling deity, and has only ventured up to 205 pounds when the promotion needed a favor. In addition, "The Spider" -- who claims he can make the welterweight limit -- is already booked to throw hands opposite Nick Diaz at the UFC 183 pay-per-view (PPV) in February.

I guess it's better than calling out Michael Bisping.
