Ahead of the Bellator 131: "Tito vs. Bonnar" Spike TV event on Nov. 15, 2014, promotion president Scott Coker spoke to Marcos Villegas of Fight Hub about the future of the organization.
Coker admits it has been a wild ride so far.
"I signed on to the company, and two days later I was on a train going 800 miles an hour. 'Oh by the way we have a fight in three weeks.' We're still going 500 miles an hour (with) the weekly shows. We did more shows in my time with Bellator than the first two years of Strikeforce put together."
He explains that he was happy to do away with the tournament format in Bellator.
"I don't think you just do tournaments after tournaments after tournaments. At that point it's just a volume (of fights), but you're not putting on fights that the fans want to see, you're not putting on fights that are gonna move the television needle, or that the media is gonna care about, or that are relevant in the MMA space. And that's what we want to do, we want to be promoters that put on relevant fights."
Coker discusses the accusations levied by Tito Ortiz, among others, that Stephan Bonnar is a cheater who got off light when he should have been suspended after UFC 153.
"We're bound by the California State Athletic Commission, they gave us some rules and guidelines to abide by, and we tested (Bonnar) and the results are being sent to the state. People make mistakes, and I think that Stephan's no different, he made a judgment error. We're going to give him a second chance, and I have no problem with saying that."
Coker's remarks come at 5:42 of the clip below.
Coker promises that there will be big news coming from Bellator MMA in the next few weeks, though he plays it close to the vest.
"You know what? We will be (signing fighters), but that's top secret. I can't tell you who."
