The last time you saw Glover Teixeira, he was getting beat up by Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones. Phil Davis, meanwhile, was owned in every way by a rejuvenated Anthony Johnson. The two met in the co-main event of tonight's (Oct. 25, 2014) UFC 179: "Aldo vs. Mendes 2" pay-per-view (PPV) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to see who could bounce back.
It's a wonderful day to be "Mr. Wonderful".
Much to the chagrin of everyone who watched the other fights on this card, Davis opened with a takedown attempt. One of Teixeira's strengths, however, is his ability to avoid such a thing and he did just that. He also offered up some punishment when Davis was in range.
Davis didn't give up on the takedown, however, and worked a clinch game against the fence, delivering hard shots when he had a free hand to do so. Teixeira, frankly, looked powerless to stop this as the first round came to a close.
He looked the same through most of the second, as Davis continued suffocating the Brazilian with relentless pressure. By the time they got to the third, Teixieira knew he almost certainly needed a finish to win.
Still, "Mr. Wonderful" worked his wrestling, all the way to the final horn and a unanimous decision victory on scores of 30-27 across the board.
