Alexander Gustafsson vs. Rashad Evans in the works for UFC main event on Jan. 24 in Sweden

Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sp

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is working on a light heavyweight showdown that would send Alexander Gustafsson into a headlining battle against Rashad Evans on Jan. 24, 2015, in Stockholm, Sweden, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

The event is being targeted for FOX; however, nothing is official at this time.

After holding out for a Jon Jones title fight following a blistering technical knockout win over Jimi Manuwa in London, England, Gustafsson (16-2) finally relented and agreed to throw hands opposite fellow contender Anthony Johnson. Unfortunately, "Rumble" was benched pending a domestic violence investigation and has no timetable for his return.

And "The Mauler" has done enough waiting.

Looking to fill the void is Evans (19-3-1), who like his Swedish counterpart, went the distance against "Bones" and aims to get a second chance to be the man (behind Daniel Cormier) to end the champ's title reign. "Suga" hasn't been seen since beating the brakes off Chael Sonnen nearly a year ago.

What makes this pairing unique is that both former No. 1 contenders are coming off knee surgery, so the playing field looks to be even.

Stay tuned to for more details on this upcoming event as they become available.
