Latest UFC/MMA rankings (welterweight), Oct. 2014: Askren and Shields move up, Maia returns

Same as it ever was?

SB Nation

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) continues to reshuffle its welterweight rankings in the wake of recent events like UFC Fight Night 54, where Rory MacDonald slept Tarec Saffiedine on FOX Sports 1. Unfortunately, the highlight-reel win (watch it) didn't do much to improve his standing.

But UFC 181 will take care of that.

Until then, we have to sort things out in this rapidly-changing division. Dong Hyun Kim -- present and accounted for the last time we went to the war room -- has been dishonorably discharged from the divisional honor roll. That promoted Jake Shields and Ben Askren, and reintroduced Demian Maia.

That's not all.

Your friends at MMAmania.com, MMA Fighting, and Bloody Elbow have gone global to compile a list of the 10 best fighters at 170 pounds, no matter where they compete, and this is what they came up with to close out the month of September.

No surprises here.

1. Johny Hendricks
2. Robbie Lawler
3. Rory MacDonald
4. Tyron Woodley
5. Carlos Condit
6. Hector Lombard
7. Matt Brown
8. Ben Askren
9. Jake Shields
10. Demian Maia

Sorry, no love for Rick Story or Jake Ellenberger. To see how this list compares to the "official" UFC rankings click here.
