What a difference a year makes.
World Series of Fighting (WSOF), World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Miguel Torres will fight for the United Combat League mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion on Feb. 15, 2014 in Hammond, Indiana.
The 33-year-old former WEC champion will fight Giovanni Moljo (4-5) in the evening's main event. The selling point for company owner Mike Davis is not necessarily Torres, but cheap tickets (via Chicago MMA):
“When Miguel and I sat down to discuss the event, we essentially had two options: we could either do an expensive ticket and have a good crowd in attendance, or we could have a ticket price that would guarantee that anyone who wanted to come see the event could afford to. It was an obvious choice. I am willing to bet that there isn’t a pro show that has been done in the Illinois/Indiana area with a ticket price as low as ours. On Feb. 15, we are having a coming home party for Miguel and literally everyone is invited.”
After being cut by UFC in late 2012 following a loss to Michael McDonald, the former champ joined WSOF. He fought twice for Ray Sefo and Co. (where he remains under contract), losing back-to-back bouts and six of his last nine.
He was also arrested on marijuana charges last year.
With a record of (40-7) Torres is surely worthy of being the center of attention at the Hammond Civic Center. Here's hoping the fight is a new start for the Indiana native and that he can bounce back from his string of poor choices and disappointing results.
