A battle between two lightweights at completely different stages of their careers has been booked.
Thirteen-fight UFC veteran Thiago Tavares has been booked opposite Strikeforce prospect Quinn Mulhern at UFC Fight Night 32 later this year (Nov. 9, 2013) in Goiania, Brazil.
MMA Fighting broke the news earlier today.
Tavares (17-5-1) most recently was defeated via brutal first round TKO by Khabib Nurmagomedov in front of his native countrymen in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He compounded the loss by testing positive for steroids in his post-fight drug screening and has been out of action for nine months.
The Brazilian Top Team Fighter will be looking to redeem himself in more ways than one in front of his hometown fans this time around.
Mulhern (18-3) was ranked as one of the best welterweight prospects around, and proved it with a successful 3-1 stint inside the Strikeforce cage, but he was derailed in a big way by Rick Story in his Octagon debut, getting blitzed en route to a first round TKO loss. The lanky 6'3 fighter is hoping a drop down to lightweight will be the key to success inside the Octagon.
He was hoping to have already made his lightweight debut against Ryan Couture, but an injury forced him to delay the drop down..
UFC Fight Night 32 is headlined by the light-heavyweight showdown between Vitor Belfort and Dan Henderson, and features the original TUF Brazil 1 middleweight final Cezar Ferreira vs. Daniel Sarafian in the co-main event. For all the latest rumors and news related to the card, click here.
