Just a week after it was announced his fight against Hugo Viana at UFC Fight Night 28 had been cancelled due to injury, Wilson Reis has now been slotted to replace Norifumi Yamamoto at UFC 165 against Ivan Menjivar at the Sept. 21, 2013 pay-per-view (PPV) event from Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
UFC announced the change on Tuesday.
Reis, the first and only EliteXC bantamweight champion, signed with Bellator in 2009 and lost three times in the company's featherweight semifinals. He ended up being released from the promotion following a loss to current champion Eduardo Dantas.
That was then. This is now.
Reis stepped up on short notice in order to make his UFC debut. He picked up four straight wins on the regional scene following his disappointing run in Bellator and his last victory came against Owen Roddy at Cage Warriors 50 in Glasgow, Scotland.
He now looks to keep his winning streak alive at 135 pounds against Menjivar.
"The Pride of El Salvador" returns to the Octagon looking to bounce back from a submission loss to Urijah Faber at UFC 157. Menjivar holds a 4-2 record under the ZUFFA banner with two victories that earned him "submission of the night" bonuses.
UFC 165 is brimming with two title fights already announced, including Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson. Click here to see the card in its glorious entirety.
