UFC 165 injuries and medical suspensions: Jon Jones, Alexander Gustafsson get 60-day sits

Now that the dust has settled and the smoke has cleared, it's time to find out who's worse for the wear following the carnage at UFC 165: "Jones vs. Gustafsson" this past weekend (Sept. 21, 2013) In Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

The complete list of UFC 165 fighter injuries and medical suspensions for those who competed at the "Jones vs. Gustafsson" pay-per-view (PPV) event this past Saturday night (Sept. 21, 2013) from Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, were released earlier today (via MMA Weekly) by The Office of the Athletics Commissioner of Ontario.

Hurt so good!

Despite a mangled eye and visible limp, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones got benched for 60 days after his successful five-round title defense in the main event (watch full video highlights here) against Alexander Gustafsson, who was also levied the same suspension for his wounds suffered in the instant classic.

If their post-fight hospital photo (see it here) was any indication, it would seem like the suspensions are rather minor; however, neither fighter broke any "Bones," so it clearly looked a lot worse than medical reality.

Meanwhile, Eddie Wineland was also sent to the bench for 60 days following his second-round knockout loss at the hands of interim-bantamweight champion Renan Barao (watch full video highlights here). Also making an appointment with his physician is Matt Mitrione, who was put to sleep by Brendan Schaub in the very first round (watch full video highlights here).

That's not all.

Here is the complete list of UFC 165 fighter injuries and their medical instructions:

  • Jon Jones: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI, plus x-ray before return.
  • Alexander Gustafsson: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.
  • Eddie Wineland: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.
  • Matt Mitrione: Suspended 30 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.
  • Mike Ricci: Suspended 30 days. Additionally, needs x-ray before return.
  • Chris Clements: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.
  • Renee Forte: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.
  • Nandor Guelmino: Suspended 60 days. Additionally, needs CT scan or MRI before return.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.
