The co-main event of tonight's (Sat., Sept. 21, 2013) UFC 165: "Jones vs. Gustafsson" pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, featured a bantamweight (Interim) championship showdown pitting current titleholder Renan Barao against veteran challenger Eddie Wineland.
A win would mean a date with Dominick Cruz, likely early next year.
Well step up to the plate, Mr. Barao.
After the first round, it seemed these two would engage in a competitive back-and-forth fight, one that could go the distance and lead to some wacky judges decision. All that changed when the Brazilian used a spinning back kick to put Wineland on Queer Street.
The follow up onslaught of punches led to a referee stoppage. It was a vicious finish, one fitting of an Interim champion who can't wait to finally fight for the actual title.
Stay tuned for that ... if Cruz ever gets healthy.
