This evening (Sept. 21, 2013), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) returns to Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Canada, with UFC 165 LIVE on pay-per-view (PPV).
The mixed martial arts (MMA) night is headlined by a Light Heavyweight title fight between division champion Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson. With a win, Jones would cement himself as the greatest 205-pound fighter in the history of the promotion.
In the co-main event, Renan Barao will put the interim Bantamweight title on the line against former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) 135-pound champion, Eddie Wineland. Barao has been on an absolute tear and hopes to put a stamp on the title challenger.
The night kicks off in little more than one hour (6 p.m. ET) with eight solid "Prelims" under card fights that feature some of the best young talent in the UFC.
To watch the Facebook "Prelims" live online right now click here (start time is 6 p.m. ET) before tuning into Fox Sports 1 (formerly SPEED) at 8 p.m. ET.
Meantime, check out our live Twitter.com reactions from around the social scene, which will be updated throughout the evening with the best the Internets has to offer.
Here we go!:
Nandor Guelmino vs Daniel Omielanczuk
Nice one. Bless you, heavyweight who's name I can't pronounce.
— Loretta Hunt (@lorettahuntmma) September 21, 2013
Nandor got knocked back to middle earth with that shot. Yikes.
— Duane Finley (@DuaneFinleyMMA) September 21, 2013
He die! His die! He is die!
— Luke Thomas (@SBNLukeThomas) September 21, 2013
Was there some sort of a mini-heavyweight tournament that also involved Soa Palelei and Nikita Krylov that I didn't know about? #UFC165
— MMA mania (@mmamania) September 21, 2013
This yahoo in Nandor's corner is the same guy who probably volunteered him for Barnett.
— Steven Marrocco (@MMAjunkieSteven) September 21, 2013
Roland Delorme vs Alex Caceres
I'm always amused when MMA media and fans can't distinguish between "active" and "good." They are not always the same thing.
— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) September 21, 2013
If you had 'scramble' as the most-used word in this Caceres-Delorme fight, congrats, you win the pool.
— Ben Fowlkes (@benfowlkesMMA) September 21, 2013
Michel Prazeres vs Jesse Ronson
Cro-Magnon grunt from Ronson to close out fight. Prazares waves like beauty queen at bell.
— Steven Marrocco (@MMAjunkieSteven) September 21, 2013
Serious question: why does everyone give it to the guy just holding or clinging onto someone by default? Esp. when striking/subs mean more?
— Dallas Winston (@UncleJustice) September 21, 2013
i fear a Canadian Screwjob here
— Earl Montclair (@EarlMontclair) September 21, 2013
Next up here at Decisionfest '13, aka #UFC165, is John Makdessi against Renee Forte
— Kevin Iole (@KevinI) September 21, 2013
Todd Anderson is an awful referee #UFC165
— David Bixenspan (@davidbix) September 21, 2013
That was some horrifying officiating. That is how someone gets hurt. That can't stand. Poor Forte.
— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) September 21, 2013
Makdessi clocked Forte with a right hand that dropped him cold. Fight was finished with strikes on the ground. First-round KO. #UFC165
— Erik Fontanez (@Erik_Fontanez) September 21, 2013
That fight went about a dozen punches to the head too long.
— CagePotato.com (@cagepotatomma) September 21, 2013
Actually, that was pretty cool of Rogan to pause for Makdessi's sponsor love.
— Dallas Winston (@UncleJustice) September 21, 2013
John Makdessi with the big knockout and there goes Daniel Obiwankenobi's chance at knockout of the night bonus. #UFC165
— Damon Martin (@DamonMartin) September 21, 2013
Mitch Gagnon chokes out Dustin Kimura in the first round of a very good back and forth fight. Excellent bout. Kimura's first loss.
— Kevin Iole (@KevinI) September 22, 2013
Great short fight between Mitch Gagnon & Dustin Kimura; Gagnon eventually finishes with a technical submission by guillotine. #UFC165
— Mike Chiappetta MMA (@MikeChiappetta) September 22, 2013
Fantastic scrap. Oh wait, these are prelim fighters? The ones some claim 'don't matter'? Nevermind. What a waste of time!
— Luke Thomas (@SBNLukeThomas) September 22, 2013
MMA needs to implement the pro wrestling rule where the referee lifts the fighter's arm 3 times. It might fall twice but comes alive on 3rd
— FrontRowBrian (@FrontRowBrian) September 22, 2013
Gagnon is TOUGH! Brilliant finish. #UFC165
— Dave Sholler (@Sholler_UFC) September 22, 2013
Chris Clements vs Stephen Thompson
Awesome fight. Stephen Thompson looked fantastic. Spectacular, accurate strikes #UFC165
— David Bixenspan (@davidbix) September 22, 2013
Thompson gets a KO win, but it is only a matter of time until he gets knocked out bad in MMA
— T. P. Grant (@TP_Grant) September 22, 2013
Great stoppage by Big John. Clements was out on the feet. #UFC165 #MMA
— Rob Tatum (@RobTatumMMA) September 22, 2013
That wasn't quite the Rolles Gracie-DJ Unk 'Walk It Out' KO, but I'll take it.
— Luke Thomas (@SBNLukeThomas) September 22, 2013
If that punch felt anything like it sounded, I feel pretty bad for Clements right now.
— Dann Stupp (@MMAjunkieDann) September 22, 2013
Big time finish by Stephen Thompson. Clements was overmatched, and Wonderboy treated him like he should have. Loved the power from Thompson.
— Josh Gross (@JoshGrossESPN) September 22, 2013
I don't know why I put these bad, bad fighters in my bet.
— Conor McGregor (@TheNotoriousMMA) September 22, 2013
Impressed Gilbert Yvel made bantamweight
— laura gilbert (@TGILaura) September 22, 2013
Wilson Reis looks like a potato
— Nick Yidiaris (@NYid07) September 22, 2013
uhhh that's FORMER ELITEXC CHAMPION Wilson Reis, Buffer
— Chris Nelson (@3amMMA) September 22, 2013
Lets Gooooo!! @wilsonreis7 Reppin Philly baby
— Edward Alvarez (@Ealvarezfight) September 22, 2013
How can Ivan Menjivar be 31? Is that right? He;s getting younger and smaller? This is some Oscar Wilde stuff.
— Jonathan Snowden (@mmaencyclopedia) September 22, 2013
Reis was so happy that he tried to jump on the cage and straddle it, but he couldn't make it & jumped back down. That's fitting. #UFC165
— Mike Chiappetta MMA (@MikeChiappetta) September 22, 2013
I'd be a terrible judge because I'd just start to take away points because of it being terrible and boring. I got this 7-3 Reis. #UFC165
— Matthew Roth (@MattRoth512) September 22, 2013
That wasn't the fight I was expecting at all!!!
— Dana White (@danawhite) September 22, 2013
Some fans here counting down the last 10 seconds in joy. Chorus of boos at the finish. #UFC165
— Mike Chiappetta MMA (@MikeChiappetta) September 22, 2013
I have never been so excited for Joe and Dana Screaming Time.
— Jeremy Botter (@jeremybotter) September 22, 2013
I hate fighter bashing but damn that fight was disappointing.
— Kelly Crigger (@kellycrigger) September 22, 2013
I think the Ricci / Jury fight should be ruled a Double DQ and they should both be "Future Endeavored" #UFC165
— Jason Agnew (@AgnewJason) September 22, 2013
The number of pay-per-views that fight just sold: Over/under .5?
— Shaun Al-Shatti (@shaunalshatti) September 22, 2013
You can just hear the boredom in rogan's voice
— Daniel Downes (@dannyboydownes) September 22, 2013
MYLES JURY I FIND U GUILTY OF BORING ME TO DEATH
— Chris Nelson (@3amMMA) September 22, 2013
