Danny Garcia is the undisputed king of the Junior Welterweight division, defeating Argentinian power-puncher Lucas Matthysse last night (Sat., Sept. 14, 2013) via unanimous decision at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was among the most clamored-for boxing match ups of the year, as "Swift" (Garcia) put his perfect record on the line against one of the most devastating punchers in boxing (Matthysse). Garcia didn't just Garcia survive the legendary power "La Maquina," he worked him over for 12 rounds with powerful hooks that significantly damaged his right eye.
In fact, it was a surprise he was allowed to continue, considering it was swollen shut.
Matthysse never quit, though, throwing with murderous intent to the head and body to the final bell and even blasting out Garcia's mouth guard in the second-to-last round. The final frame ended in a flurry, with both standouts swinging for the fences, but it was Garcia who would retain his unified 140-pound world titles, winning on scores of 115-111 and 114-112 (twice).
Fun fight.
