Before the blockbuster boxing main event between Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Saul "Canelo" Alvarez takes place tonight (Sat., Sept. 14, 2013) from MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada (main event results here), an entire three-bout under card was broadcast on Showtime pay-per-view (PPV).
In the co-main event of the evening, WBC and WBA (Super) Junior Welterweight Danny Garcia put his title -- and perfect professional record (26-0) -- on the line against hard-hitting Argentinian Lucas Matthysse.
Ashely Theophane vs. Pablo Cesar Cano
Cano struck fast and early, putting Theophane on the defensive for the first few rounds of the fight. In fact, he had Theophane rocked, trying to survive the round multiple times. But Theophane was able to regain his composure and put together a solid offense in the second half of the fight.
Theophane started to work Cano over with straight punches, but wasn't able to put Cano away. Cano survived and worked the body with inside hooks. The two fighters traded punches until the final bell, with Cano landing the more significant strikes.
The judges scored the bout 96-94 Theophane, 98-92 Cano, 97-93 Cano. Well earned decision by Pablo Cesar Cano.
Ishe Smith vs Carlos Molina
The bout between Ishe Smith and Carlos Molina was perhaps one of the closest boxing matches you'll ever have the pleasure of seeing. For the entire fight, the fighters kept pace with one another, trading punches inside the pocket in order to win the round.
The biggest issue is that the referee made himself a bit too well known. He kept warning Molina for illegal shots and let the fighters know that they had to stop holding onto one another. He never went as far as penalizing a fighter for an illegal blow.
The judges ended up split in their decision, scoring the bout 117-111 Molina, 116-112 Smith, 116-112 Molina.
Danny Garcia vs Lucas Matthysse
What a fight!
Danny Garcia entered the ring as the underdog, despite being the 140 pound champion. And he rose to the occasion to prove that he is the very best fighter at 140 pounds. He circled well and punished Matthysse with punches to the face and body.
The damage began to pay off as Matthysse's eye was swollen shut by the seventh round. From there it was all Garcia who worked multiple punch combinations. Matthysse tried to stage a late comeback in the final three rounds, but it was just too little too late.
The fight went to the score cards, with Garcia earning a unanimous decision. The judges scored the bout 115-111, 114-112, and 114-112.
Garcia's win cements him as the best fighter in the division and one of the bright spots for the future of boxing.
Here are the complete results from "Mayweather vs. Canelo" preliminary boxing action on Showtime PPV:
140 lbs.: Danny Garcia def. Lucas Matthysse via unanimous decision
154 lbs.: Carlos Molina def. Ishe Smith via split decision.
140 lbs.: Pablo Cesar Cano def. Ashley Theophane via split decision.
That's it for the under card portion of "Mayweather vs. Canelo" fight card.
