We set you up! Mayweather boasts about catchweight, Canelo reveals rejected fight day weight limit clause

Saul Alvarez will try to unseat Floyd Mayweather Jr. from his pound-for-pound throne this Saturday night (Sept. 14, 2013) when the two undefeated pugilists exchange leather in the Showtime boxing pay-per-view (PPV) bonanza at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

But first, "Canelo" has to make weight.

The Ring Light Middleweight Champion won't have to drop down to 147 pounds, something his opponent expected during negotiations, but at the same time, he won't be able to prance around at 154 pounds, either. By the time the ink was dry, the agreed-upon limit was 152 pounds.

And according to "Money" (via "All Access"), Alvarez walked right into his trap.

"'I'll drop to 150 for Floyd Mayweather.' That's what you said, Canelo. We set you up! His team was a dumb team. But guess what? We're the smart ones! We build 'em up, put 'em on the undercard. Build him up, make him into something he's really not, and just beat him. He don't think I know he's been wearing that plastic. He been wearing that plastic for the last two days. He ain't eat no food in two days. I'm eating some pizza tonight."

Mayweather sounds like a pretty cool customer, but the Alvarez team paints a very different picture. In addition to accusing him of "crying" over the weight limit, "Canelo" also lambastes the WBA Super Welterweight Champion for demanding a fight-day weigh in.

Canelo said Mayweather tried to include a "rehydration clause" in the fight contract, where Canelo would be unable to weigh above a certain number on the day of the fight. Canelo, who rehydrates to more than 170-pounds on the day of the fight, rejected that clause.

"They came up with a second-day weigh-in. They wanted to do a second-day weigh-in and limit what I could weigh the second day, and I wouldn't agree to that. And then they tried to force me to stay quiet and to not mention it, and that's why we didn't say anything. And we haven't said anything until now," Canelo said.

Today's "Mayweather vs. Canelo" weigh-in event (watch the live stream here) will say a lot about how the weight cut affected Alvarez, if at all. Then again, we may not be able to know for sure until fight night, particularly if the bout extends to the later rounds.
