All things must come to and end.
Former "Submission of the Year" winner and DEEP Middleweight Champion Ryo Chonan announced earlier today that he plans to retire following his next fight, which is scheduled to take place in two months (Oct. 20, 2013) in the main event of DEEP: Tribe Tokyo Fight at the Karakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
According to Fight Sports Asia, the bout will be against current DEEP Welterweight Champion Dan Hornbuckle, who defeated Chonan's teammate Yuya Shirai this past April to capture the belt.
Both men were originally supposed to fight back in 2010 for Sengoku, but Hornbuckle was forced to back out at the last minute due to illness.
Chonan (21-13) is most widely remembered for his incredible flying scissor heel hook of former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva back at Pride Shockwave 2004 which won "The Piranha" the Submission of the Year. Up until Chris Weidman's recent upset, Chonan held the honor of the last man to legitimately defeat Silva in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition.
Chonan most recently defeated Seichi Ikemoto this past April via unanimous decision.
