Last night (August 3, 2013) at UFC 163, Phil Davis met former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida in the co-main event at the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
The fight went the full 15 minutes and there was some controversy when Bruce Buffer read the score cards. Davis took a Unanimous Decision with all three judges scoring the fight 29-28. Machida afterwards said he's hoping for an immediate rematch.
Brian Stann took to the cage to get both fighter's thoughts on the fight. It's pretty telling that neither sounded entirely confident that they did enough to win.
"I love Lyoto Machida. I've been a fan of his since I started watching the UFC. This man was a champion. Please don't boo Rio. This man is awesome. The late takedowns definitely help. That's always my strategy, to get takedowns and work all the time. That's part of what I do."
"That's exactly what they told me. They told me to go in hard. That's what I tried to do. I don't know what happened."
This light heavyweight match up is a clear example of fighting not to lose, instead of to win.
