What should be a thrilling bantamweight contest has been added to the UFC on FOX Sports 1 debut card as former World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) champion and fan favorite Urijah Faber will take on Brazilian sensation Yuri Alcantara at the Aug. 17, 2013 event.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White said the historic event in his hometown of Boston, Mass., was going to be the best free fight card his organization has put together, and with each passing day and announced bout it appears he is ready to live up to his word.
UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta confirmed the 135-pound match up to Case Keefer of the Las Vegas Sun on Tuesday (June 4, 2013).
Faber (28-6) has already competed twice in 2013, defeated top-10 ranked contenders Ivan Menjivar and Scott Jorgensen by submission in the span of six weeks.
"The California Kid" isn't taking any time to rest, though, as he jumps into yet another tough match up where he will attempt to win a third consecutive bout for the first time since 2007.
Alcantara (28-4, 1 NC) is faced with a tremendous opportunity to jump up the rankings against a very well known fighter after dishing out a brutal first-round knockout to Illarde Santos at UFC on FX 8 in May.
The 32-year-old has only suffered one UFC defeat in five appearances with the organization and with 24 finishes in his 28 victories will undoubtedly be looking to put Faber away inside the distance and make a statement to every fighter in his weight class.
UFC on FOX Sports 1 #1 does not haven an official main event at this time, however, a heavyweight pairing between Alistair Overeem and Travis Browne has been confirmed for the card.
