Report: Matt Brown and Thiago Alves agree to fight at UFC on FOX Sports 1 card in August

Thiago Alves will make his long-awaited return to the cage this summer at the UFC on FOX Sports 1 card as "Pitbull" has reportedly agreed to meet Matt Brown at the Aug. 17 event in Boston.

USA TODAY Sports

With a lot of talk surrounding what kind of fight card the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is going to put together for it's debut on FOX Sports 1 later this year, the first reported match up for the event has finally trickled in.

Matt Brown will go from fighting on back-to-back FOX cards to the FOX Sports 1 debut event when he welcomes Thiago Alves back from an extended hiatus in a welterweight contest between two striking specialists at TD Garden in Boston, Mass., on Aug. 17, 2013.

The piece of matchmaking is a bit curious as Brown is currently on a career-high five-fight win-streak while Alves has dropped four of his last six and has not competed since March 2011.

Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting first reported news of the contest on Saturday (May 4, 2013) morning; however, UFC officials have yet to confirm the 170-pound affair.

Brown (17-11) is in the midst of one of the most stunning career resurgences in UFC history as he has reeled off five consecutive victories after a stint where he lost four of five bouts. Brown's last two victories were particularly impressive as he knocked Mike Swick out cold at UFC on FOX 5 and then just a few month later stopped rising Canadian prospect Jordan Mein at UFC on FOX 7.

"The Immortal" has requested increasingly difficult competition as his win-streak grows and he will certainly be in for a stern test in the former welterweight title challenger Alves.

Alves (20-9) has struggled to find consistency in recent years, fighting only three times since the beginning of 2011 and losing two of those bouts. Since failing to capture the 170-pound title from Georges St. Pierre at UFC 100, Alves has gone 2-3 with his only victories coming to low caliber opposition in John Howard and Papy Abedi.

The 29-year-old has been on the sidelines nursing pectoral muscle, PCL and ACL injuries since his come-from-behind loss to Martin Kampmann at UFC on FX 2. Once again healthy, "Pitbull" will look to regain the form that earned him a seven-fight UFC win-streak from 2006-2008.

It is unknown at this time if Brown vs. Alves will take place on the preliminary or main card of the UFC on FOX Sports 1 debut event.
