Yeah, this is really happening.
Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight number one contender, Nick Diaz, has decided to start his own mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion titled "WAR MMA," and has now secured a temporary promoter's license to kick off his inaugural show at the Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif., on June 22, 2013.
The promotion's official website launched earlier today, as well.
As of now, there are six bouts official for next month's show, which is expected to stream live online for free, including a main event that pits former UFC welterweight Daniel Roberts taking on Gladiator Challenge and KOTC veteran Justin Baesman.
That's not all.
Here is the current WAR MMA fight card and line up:
Main Event:
170 lbs.: Daniel Roberts vs. Justin Baesman
Other scheduled fights:
125 lbs.: Antonio Banuelos vs. Benny Vinson
145 lbs.: Caleb Mitchell vs. Evan Esguerra
205 lbs.: Roy Boughton vs. Liron Wilson
185 lbs.: Mike Persons vs. Clayton McKinney
135 lbs.: Darin Cooley vs. Cody Gibson.
Expect more fight announcements in the coming days.
Bouts will be fought under the Unified Rules of MMA, but like the now-defunct Affliction, will take place inside a ring instead of a cage. In addition, elbow strikes to a grounded opponent have been banned and the promotion "encourages grapplers to advance their position instead of stalling."
Alrighty then.
Non-championship bouts will be contested over three, five minute rounds while future championship bouts will use five, five minute rounds. Wolf Tickets went on sale via Ticketmaster earlier today (May 29) and range in price from $20-$90. Click here to scoop up a pair.
Should be interesting.
