UFC 160 results recap: Junior dos Santos trilogy fight is next for Cain Velasquez

Cain Velasquez may very well be an unstoppable force in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight division after witnessing how effortlessly he was able to defend his title in the UFC 160 main event.

Even though it was an expected result, Velasquez once again ran through Antonio Silva on Saturday night (May 25, 2013) at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas and did it in equally, if not more impressive fashion than his first victory over "Bigfoot" in May 2012.

More importantly than improving to 2-0 in his series against Silva, the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) product finally achieved that elusive first title defense and he can now breathe a little bit easier.

Velasquez has said in the past he's of the belief a fighter isn't a true champion until they defend their belt, and after striking out on his first title defense against Junior dos Santos in his last title reign, wasn't about to make the same mistake twice.

With the Silva portion of his career behind him, Velasquez now moves on to the next challenge, which will come in the form of yet another familiar Brazilian foe in dos Santos -- a man who earned a heavyweight title shot with a remarkable spinning wheel kick knockout over Mark Hunt in the UFC 160 co-main event.

Dos Santos is just one win removed from a loss to Velasquez at UFC 155, but he is also the only man to hold a victory over the 30-year-old champion and the two have split the first two matches of their rivalry.

UFC President Dana White said prior to the event that "Cigano" would get his trilogy bout with Velasquez if he defeated Hunt, and he did just that with a statement finish against "The Super Samoan."

Even though they fought just over five months ago, there appears to be no hesitation from Velasquez, dos Santos or the UFC brass to put the trilogy bout together as soon as possible, which -- depending on how you look at it -- could be a poor idea.

Trilogies at the highest level of the sport don't come around too often, but when they do it's something worth garnishing for the biggest fight possible.

Perhaps the UFC feels a third fight won't than after Velasquez and dos Santos picked up knockout wins on the same night, but putting a third fight off a while longer would certainly help build intrigue and create more time for the mixed martial arts (MMA) community to distance themselves from the memory of the five-round beating Velasquez put on dos Santos in the second fight.

Plus, Velasquez has only fought Silva and dos Santos over the past two-pus years, so seeing him matched up against a fresh face would be an appealing alternative.

With that said, though, there aren't any fights in the heavyweight division for Velasquez that jump out as a "must-see." Fabricio Werdum would have an argument for a title shot with a win over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in June, and guys like Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Alistair Overeem and even Josh Barnett have done nothing to justify a shot at the belt.

The one person Velasquez definitely won't be facing is his good friend and training partner Daniel Cormier.

The two fighters are ranked in the top-3 of the heavyweight division, but considering they are teammates at AKA in California, the odds of seeing them fight each other are non-existent. In fact, Cormier is already inching his way towards a drop to the 205-pound weight class.

While fans may not be knocking down the door to see the trilogy fight, Velasquez vs. dos Santos 3, which UFC President Dana White called a "no-brainer" after last night, is most likely the match up on the docket as the next heavyweight title fight.
