The lightweight division is no longer the logjam it once was, and that was reflected in the number one contender bout that took place tonight (Sat., May 25, 2013) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, pitting Gray Maynard vs. T.J. Grant on the pay-per-view (PPV) main card portion of the UFC 160: "Velasquez vs. Bigfoot 2" event.
The winner was promised an immediate shot at Ben Henderson, though plans often change.
Although it was expected these two would battle hard, no one could have expected the absolute throwdown that occurred once they started exchanging blows.
Grant came in with hard punches and Maynard answered back every single time. Eventually, though, Grant's onslaught was simply too much to overcome, and while "The Bully's" chin held up relatively well through a barrage of big blasts, the referee had no choice but to jump in to save him.
Even if he never went completely out.
Either way, look out Ben Henderson, T.J. Grant is coming for that title.
