After publicly stating he wanted the fight last week, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight contender Erik Koch will get his wish and fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 164 this August.
The two top 145-pound fighters were lined up to face each other once before at UFC 143 in Feb. 2012; however, an undisclosed injury to Koch forced him off the card and each man went his separate way.
Now a little over a year later and with both fighters coming off losses in high-profile bouts, their paths are ready to cross again.
MMA Weekly reported confirmation of the match up on Thursday (May 23, 2013), and despite both fighters posting on Twitter that the bout will indeed take place, UFC officials have not commented.
Koch (13-2), No. 9 in the official UFC rankings, was supposed to fight 145-pound champion Jose Aldo on two separate occasions in 2012, but both times the fight fell through and the 24-year-old instead fought Lamas.
Poirier (13-3), No. 7 in the official UFC rankings, burst through the door in the UFC by winning his first four bouts with the organization but has since fallen on hard times, losing two of his last three.
It is unknown at this time if Koch vs. Poirier will take place on the preliminary or main card.
UFC 164 goes down from the Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., on Aug. 31, 2013. A main event for the card has not been announced at this time.
