The injury bug has hit the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's (UFC) next fight card in Canada as interim Bantamweight champion Renan Barao is reportedly out of the UFC 161 headliner against Eddie Wineland.
According to a report from Brazilian news outlet TATAME on Saturday (May 18, 2013), the 26-year-old suffered a foot injury and is unable to compete at the June 15, 2013 event set to take place at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Barao (30-1) last competed at UFC on FUEL TV 7 in February where he successfully defended his interim title for the first time against Michael McDonald with a fourth-round arm-triangle choke.
The Brazilian wanted to keep active while waiting for 135-pound champion Dominick Cruz to recovery from injuries; however, his plan has appartently been thwarted with this latest setback.
The extent of Barao's injury is unknown at this time and UFC officials have yet to formally comment on the situation as well as a potential replacement for the UFC 161 main event.
UPDATE: John Morgan of MMA Junkie provides on update on Barao's status from UFC officials
