Too soon?
Chael Sonnen was polished off by Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones during last weekend's UFC 159 main event (watch the replay here), which went down on April 27, 2013 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
"The American Gangster" was put on his back and pounded into the loss column, thanks to an intervention by referee Keith Peterson, who intercepted the broken "Bones" with just 27 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Following the fight, Sonnen told the crowd he had "no problem" with the stoppage.
Dan Henderson did.
Those are luxuries afforded to "the greatest fighter ever."
"Hendo," who hopes to (finally) earn his shot against Jones with a win over Rashad Evans at UFC 161, is a longtime friend and training partner of Sonnen's dating back to their early days at Team Quest. While the challenger wasn't unconscious, he failed to convince the man in black he was doing enough to keep himself from sustaining further damage.
Better luck next time -- if there is a next time.
