The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (NJSACB) today issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen," which took place last Saturday night (April 27, 2013) from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
With several of the bouts ending by way of submission, knockout or injury, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged for follow up visits to their doctors. In fact, 14 of the night's 22 competitors were suspended for a minimum of 30 days.
MMA Junkie obtained the list of suspensions from the NJSACB.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight titleholder Jon Jones, who defeated Chael Sonnen by first-round technical knockout, got the worst of injuries, as his big toe was nearly broken off in his main event bout.
The co-main event also saw another unfortunate injury, as Alan Belcher was poked in his surgically repaired eye by Michael Bisping and needed multiple stitches to repair the wound.
Here is the complete list of UFC 159 medical suspensions and injuries:
Suspended indefinitely pending physician's clearance:
Jon Jones (left foot injury)
Alan Belcher (right eye injury)
Phil Davis (left knee injury and requires X-rays of right thumb)
Jim Miller (requires CT head scan)
Yancy Medeiros (right thumb injury)
Gian Villante (left eye injury, requires X-rays of lower leg and ankle)
Suspended 60 days (60 days no contact) pending physician's clearance:
Johnny Bedford (facial lacerations)
Kurt Holobaugh (lower lip laceration)
Suspended 45 days (45 days no contact) pending physician's clearance:
Chael Sonnen (facial laceration)
Pat Healy (facial lacerations)
Steven Siler (scalp laceration)
Suspended 30 days (30 days no contact) pending physician's clearance:
Cheick Kongo (precautionary measure for knockout loss)
Sheila Gaff (precautionary measure for TKO loss)
Bryan Caraway (rest period)
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.
