UFC 159 results: Phil Davis wins plodding decision over Vinny Magalhaes

Phil Davis used a pick apart stand up game to earn a plodding unanimous decision victory over Vinny Magalhaes at tonight's (April 27, 2013) UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" event in New Jersey.

The not-so-long-standing feud between Phil Davis and Vinny Magalhaes came to a head at tonight's (Sat., April 27, 2013) UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view (PPV) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, as the two met in a light heavyweight showcase on the main card of the evening.

In short, the two engaged in a Twitter war that led to a fight and the exchanging of threats that were to be carried out tonight.

The first round saw both fighters get aggressive but do very little in the way of meaningful offense. Davis got the better of the standing exchanges while doing everything he could to avoid going to the mat with the jiu-jitsu world champion. Magalhaes earned a takedown or two but couldn't keep Phil on the floor.

In the second, Vinny resorted to trying to pull guard to get "Mr. Wonderful" to come down with him. It didn't work, of course, but trading punches certainly wasn't doing him any favors either.

The third and final frame featured a repeat of the first two. Put simply, Davis picked Magalhaes apart, avoiding contesting the bout on the floor where Vinny would have the advantage. By the time all was said and done, Davis had landed over 100 "significant strikes" according to Fight Metric.

He also earned unanimous boos from the New Jersey audience. Oh well.

A win is a win.
