Match ups are slowly beginning to trickle in for UFC on FOX 8 this summer as a middleweight bout between longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Ed Herman and the debuting Trevor Smith will go down at the July 27, 2013, event, set to take place at Key Arena in Seattle, Washington.
Both men competed in their last bouts under the Strikeforce banner; however, Herman has fought a majority of his career bouts in the UFC as he was the runner-up on season three of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality show.
UFC officials confirmed the 185-pound match up on Friday (April 26, 2013).
Herman (20-9, 1 NC) made a one-time visit to the now-defunct Strikeforce organization last January to fight Ronaldo Souza in the promotion's final show. The bout did not go well for "Short Fuse," as "Jacare" submitted him with a kimura just over three minutes into the first round.
Prior to his bout with Souza, the 29-year-old was defeated by Jake Shields at UFC 150; however, decision loss was overturned to a "No Contest" when Shields was caught using a banned substance.
Winless in his last two fights, Herman will look to register his first victory since a submission of Clifford Starks at UFC 143 in Feb. 2012.
Smith (10-3) also competed at the final Strikeforce event last January where Tim Kennedy submitted him in the third round. "Hot Sauce" registered a rather mediocre 2-2 record in his time with Strikeforce, defeating Keith Berry and T.J. Cook while suffering losses to Kennedy and Gian Villante.
The native of Washington state will look to rebound from his last loss by starting his UFC career off on the right foot in front of the fans of his home state.
Herman vs. Smith will likely take place on the preliminary portion of the UFC on FOX 8 fight card, which airs on FX and Facebook. The main card airs on FOX.
UFC on FOX 8 is headlined by a flyweight championship contest between reigning 125-pound titleholder Demetrious Johnson and No. 1 contender John Moraga. Also on the card will be a welterweight showdown between top contenders Jake Ellenberger and Rory MacDonald.
