Canelo Alvarez won the WBC and WBA super welterweight championship by defeating Austin Trout tonight (Sat., April 20, 2013) in a thrilling 12-round showdown at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, live on Showtime. Trout was crafty early, pumping his jab with regularity and controlling the opening rounds. Meanwhile, Canelo was looking to hit with that one hard punch, as he held the clear power advantage. It was close throughout until the seventh round when Alvarez landed a huge right straight to the chin that wobbled "No Doubt" and put him on the mat for the very first time in his promising career. He recovered, though, and even battled back to reassert himself before the round was over. Canelo got a bit passive after that but turned it up in the later rounds, leading to plenty of doubt over whether or not he earned the decision. Either way, the judges gave it to him on scores of 115-112, 116-111, and 118-109, and he keeps his "O" as they say. Thoughts? For complete blow-by-blow coverage of the entire bout click here.
