Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight Dave Herman is getting one last chance to prolong his career inside the Octagon, despite losing three straight fights and getting suspended for marijuana.
Twice.
"Pee Wee" -- who flunked for weed prior to UFC 136 in September 2011 -- pissed dirty for the second time following a submission loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at the UFC 153 pay-per-view last October in Rio. Herman was issued a six-month suspension by ZUFFA (which acts as its own athletic commission for International events) and ordered by the promotion to complete an approved drug-rehabilitation program (details here).
Herman's manager, Shu Hirata, tells MMA Junkie his client has completed rehab and passed his drug test:
"He's got to go out and win and not test positive for marijuana to stay in the UFC. He understands the opportunity he has now. He realizes it's stupid to blow this opportunity. There are so many heavyweight fighters in the world who would love to be in the UFC, and he's one of the lucky ones. He might as well do everything he can right now, and he have fun when he's 40, 50 years old. His mind is straight-set right now."
Herman (21-5) has been finished in all three of his Octagon losses.
The promotion's decision to hang on to the 28 year-old heavyweight may come as a surprise to some mixed martial arts (MMA) fans in the wake of these roster cuts. "Pee Wee" joins a not-so-illustrious list of UFC fighters to fail for marijuana, one that includes Nick Diaz, the recently-released Matt Riddle and Thiago Silva, among others.
Nevertheless, he's back. Who do you, as a fan, want to see him fight next?
