Top Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight Alistair Overeem can't fight Junior dos Santos over the Memorial Day Weekend and mixed martial arts (MMA) fans have rallied for Mark Hunt to take his place.
Sound familiar?
It should, it's exactly what happened last year when "Demolition Man" was benched by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) for elevated testosterone. Fans wanted the "Super Samoan" to step in and take his place, in hopes to see a HOSS FIGHT between him and "Cigano."
UFC President Dana White was not on board.
Isn't it funny how history has a way of repeating itself? Now "The Reem" has suffered a slight tear in his quadriceps, according to his official Twitter, forcing him to postpone his UFC 160 bout against the Brazilian, right around the same time Hunt came up with a huge technical knockout (TKO) win in Japan.
UFC President Dana White? Still not on board.
Hey, there's always next year.
Hunt (9-7) may not qualify for a marquee match-up just yet, but if he keeps winning, sooner or later the promotion is going to have to elevate him to main event status. As it stands, the former kickboxing champion is riding four straight victories with three brutal finishes.
Until then, fight fans will have to rally for someone (or something) else. What have you got in mind?
