What's that you say, not enough fight announcements today (March 6, 2013)? Well, here's one more for you just in case you haven't had your fill yet.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) announced yet another intriguing match-up as former No. 1 flyweight contender Joseph Benavidez has been booked to swing leather against Darren Uyenoyama at UFC on FOX 7 which goes down in San Jose, Calif., on Apr. 20, 2013.
Benavidez recently got back on the winning track at UFC 156, defeating Ian McCall in a three-round battle after previously failing to capture the 125-pound title against Demetrious Johnson five months earlier in what was UFC's first-ever flyweight championship fight.
After saying he was uncertain if he wanted to fight for the title right away after besting "Uncle Creepy" on Super Bowl weekend, UFC officials granted "Joe B. Wan Kenobi" his wish by giving him another tough challenge in the form of Uyenoyama.
The former DREAM and Strikeforce veteran looks to make his own case for a shot at the title as he tries to extend his win streak to four at the expense of Benavidez.
Uyenoyama made the successful drop down to 125 pounds at UFC on FX: "Browne vs. Bigfoot" last October, defeating Phil Harris via rear-naked choke in the second round. Prior to his bout against Harris, Darren was competing in the promotions bantamweight division and defeated Norifumi Yamamoto in his Octagon debut back at UFC on FOX 1.
UFC on FOX 7 will feature a lightweight title fight between division kingpin Ben Henderson taking on former Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez and includes a heavyweight co-main event between Daniel Cormier and Frank Mir.
Benavidez or Uyenoyama, who ya' got?
