Budding mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion World Series of Fighting (WSOF) returned to Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Saturday, March 23, 2013 for its second offering on NBC Sports Network.
The main event saw former UFC heavyweight champion and MMA staple Andrei Arlovski tackle fellow UFC expat Anthony Johnson. The main card also featured a welterweight scrap between the "A-train," Aaron Simpson, taking on Josh Burkman, while bantamweight upset artists Tyson Nam, best known for his recent victory over Bellator champion Eduardo Dantes, and Marlon Moraes, who similarly upset Miguel Torres at WSOF 1, went to war.

WSOF 2 PLAY-BY-PLAY LIVE MAIN CARD COMMENTARY (NBC SPORTS):
265 lbs.: Andrei Arlovski vs. Anthony Johnson
Round 1: Arlovski tries some feeler jabs. Rumble throwing back hard. Nice kick punch combination lands from Johnson. Andrei also working outside kicks to less effect. The Pitbull throws a bit shot but hits nothing but air. Johnson is landing most of what he's throwing. Now Arlovski starting to get a rhythm going. Big kick from Johnson wiffs and they clinch up. Arlovski not landing clean but is starting to move Johson with his punches. Rumble seems to be giving him a little more respect. Johnson comes in with a three punch combination that doesn't quick connect and shoots in. Arlovski stuffs the shot and ends up against the fence. Johnson is landing a few knees. Referee resets the action. Arlovski looks for an uppercut. Big flurry gets thrown with Johnson shooting in again. Rumble once again gets stuffed and now Arlovski turns him against the fence. After a pretty inactive clinch they get reset, again. Big exchange. Arlovski comes in and eats a counter hook. Johnson goes to pounce and clips his man again, this time Arlovski goes down. Johnson attacks more. Initially appears like the ref stops it but was just calling the end of the round.
10-9 Johnson
Round 2: The action resumes with another flurry between the two men. Johnson shoots but can't score a TD. They clinch up against teh wall again and get reset. Arlovski still visibly shaken by the damage he took. They end up against the fence again and Arlovski turns Johnson around. They start striking and there appears to be an accidental groin shot. Johnson resumes, landing another big combo. This time Johnson ends with a shot that actually works. Arlovski tries to get to his feet with a whizzer but only manages to get to a turtle. Arlovski back to his feet and Johnson is shooting again. Arlovski trying some unusual strikes to Johnson's back as Johnson drops low for another TD. Very hard round to call. Gun to my head, I'd also give this one to Johnson.
20-18 Johnson
Round 3: Arlovski is looking pretty shaken at this point. The two lob out a few blows. Only Johnson seems to connect. Johnson lands another lunging jab. Johnson gets tagged with a few short shots. He throws a body kick, then another, then punches and shoots. Arlovski stuffs the double and they get reset. Johnson pawing out the jab and trying a big head kick. They both throw and Arlovski seems to get the worse of the two punches. Johnson shoots again and ends up pressing Arlovski against the cage. Andrei turns him around and starts working some knees. Arlovski lands a big elbow on the way out. Johnson comes back with another set of strikes, then shoots and gets stuffed and turned to the cage. Arlovski may actually be rallying, here. Arlovski lands two shots in a flurry. A spinning kick from the Belarussian doesn't land well, Johnson tries to shoot and gets stuffed, Then he shoots again and gets stuffed. That round goes to Arlovski. It may have actually been enough since 2 was close.
Thinking 29-28 Johnson, but could go either way.
Final result: Anthony Johnson def. Andrei Arlovski via unanimous decision

135 lbs.: Tyson Nam vs. Marlon Moraes
Round 1: Brief period of time circling around the outside. Neither man is really giving up the center of the cage. Name teeps at the legs a little. Marlon throws a couple of punches with bad intentions from the outside but misses. A quick combination and Marlon lands a round kick at the end of it. Nam tries a step through hook and gets kicked to the body for his trouble. Nam answers with a few shots. The exchanges are short and fast with Marlon landing a bit more often with those leg kicks at the end of his combos. Marlon picks the ankle for a takedown but Nam is back on his feet quick. Nam lands two solid leg kicks in a row. Nam throws a jab and Marlon comes over the top with a head kick that puts his man out on the canvas.
Final result: Marlon Moraes def. Tyson Nam via KO 2:55 of R1

185 lbs.: David Branch vs. Paulo Filho
Round 1: Paulo comes in with a trip attempt early. Gets caught twice with a cross by Branch as he comes in. The second time Branch follows up with a shot, scores the takedown, ends up in half guard. Paulo is trying to neutralize the damage potential but isn't doing much else. Branch still in half guard dropping a few shots here and there. Some more of Branches hits are getting through as time goes on. Paulo hasn't managed much save getting slightly to his side. Paulo now trying to frame out and land some elbows. Branch almost passes to mount but is riding a little too low. Filho recovers guard. Branch laying down some strikes from inside guard now. They have enough on them to hurt and score but not to finish. Branch trying for some elbow but can't get them. Then Branch stands up. Triangle attempt from Filho doesn't do much. Branch starts pouring on his best ground and pound in the final seconds.
10-9 round for Branch
Round 2: They both kick at the same time, resulting in Filho slipping. He's back up. Filho throws wild and Branch counters. Paulo is hurt. Branch tries to pounce, chasing him around the cage with strikes. He eventually settles for a takedown. Filho gets his back to the cage and wall-walks to his feet. The ref resets. Filho throwing fast balls. Branch ducks the second haymaker and scores an easy double leg. He passes to side control and gets Paulo in a mounted crucifix. Branch hitting Paulo's head. Not a whole lot of defense from Paulo. Branch pauses for a second, then continues. Paulo manages to squirm out. Branch looking for an arm triangle. Branch goes to North-South, then back to side control. Branch now throwing some elbows and knees. Then again to North-south and back to side. Paulo survives.
20-18 for Branch, so far.
Round 3: Filho opens with a leg kick. Branch stalking in. Filho tries a spin kick and gets shoved to the floor. Branch gets on top and starts pouring on the shots. Branch settles once it's apparent he won't get the finish. Branch has Filho nearly mounted and crushed against the fence. Filho gets enough space to recover half guard and the beating continues. Paulo tries to throw some elbows from half guard, but quickly resumes his role as a punching bag. Paulo pushes off and recovers guard. The referee resets the action. Filho throws some strikes that look like they're coming in slow motion. Branch stalks in. Throws a flying knee and puts Paulo against the cage. Branch breaks and throws a kick. Another head kick. Branch now landing blow after blow and transitions to one final takedown.
Branch dominates every round.
Final result: David Branch def. Paulo Filho via unanimous decision

170 lbs.: Josh Burkman vs. Aaron Simpson
Round 1: Burkman is the first to come in with a few punches. Then dances out and repeats. Simpson is dipping and ducking, trying to feel his man out. A-train gets the clinch and puts Burkman's back to the wall. Burkman seems to be more effective in the clinch utilizing knees. Burkman turns simpson to the cage and keeps working. Aaron throws a knee and they break in a flurry. Simpson stalking Burkman. Lands a leg kick. Burkman comes back with something spinning and crazy that misses. They clinch together again and once again Burkman gets the better of the striking and breaks. Simpson back to stalking. Lands a mean leg kick. Simpson tries to come in and gets wobbled with an uppercut. He quickly recovers, they clinch and break again. Simpson once again commanding the center of the cage. Burkman flurries in hard. He lands a few. Simpson on his heels. Looks like a knee ends it. Simpson is down and out in one.
Final result: Josh Burkman def. Aarson Simpson via KO (knee) 3:04 of R1

155 lbs.: Gesias Cavalcante vs. Justin Gaethje
Round 1: JZ comes in hard and fast with a few punches. Then he backs off. Justin runs in and has to stuff a takedown for his trouble. Justin coming in again with heavy hands and knees. He seems to be getting the better of JZ early on. Justin now hanging on JZ and throwing knees while keeping him against the fence. Justin breaks and throws a combination. For the second time he tries to throw a knee so hard he trips. Scrambles out. Blood showing on the head of JZ. They break off again but Justin comes in hard. He lands a few blows and once again puts JZ against the cage. Justin doing fantastic with striking in the clinch. JZ lands a good counter hook and starts to mount a small comeback. He gets pushed against the fence again. The ref calls a time out to check JZ's head as the blood seems to be spreading pretty severely. The doctor checks it out and calls it for the upset.
Final result: Justin Gaethje def. Gesias Cavalcante via doctor's stoppage 2:27 of R1
