Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight Diego Sanchez did not make the kind of return to the division he would have liked to have as "The Dream" missed the 156-pound limit by two pounds for his fight tomorrow night (March 2, 2013) at UFC on FUEL TV 8: "Silva vs. Stann."
Sanchez (23-5), who is scheduled to face Takanori Gomi on the FUEL TV portion of the fight card, came it at 158 pounds on his first pass at the scale. Despite being given one hour to shed the additional weight, Sanchez did not make a second attempt.
As a result of Sanchez's inability to make weight for the first time in his 18-fight UFC career, the UFC Tonight official Twitter account reports UFC officials have fined the 31-year-old 20 percent of his fight purse, an amount that will be determined following the event.
Sanchez's last reported purse was $100,000 for defeating Paulo Thiago at UFC 121, which means if the Albuquerque native is on the same contract, Gomi could stand to make $10,000 or $20,000, depending on the fight result.
The portion fined from Sanchez's purse will be paid to Gomi after the fight and the match up is now considered a catchweight contest.
