At next month's UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" pay-per-view (PPV) event in Newark, N.J., Phil Davis plans to silence a foe who has long tried to pick a fight with him.
Davis (10-1, 1 NC) will face Vinny Magalhaes on April 27, 2013, in a fight many believe Magalhaes only got because of his relentless Twitter assault on both Davis and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President Dana White.
"Mr. Wonderful" is the world's No. 8 ranked light heavyweight fighter, according to the official UFC rankings, while his Brazilian counterpart is an unranked fighter.
With two athletes who are on very different ends of the spectrum, one wonders why Davis would even agree to the fight.
In a recent interview with Canadian news outlet Sportsnet, the 28-year-old explained how the match up came to be and admitted he had to do a Google search for Magalhaes to find out who he is.
His words:
"He campaigned for the fight, as I say. He went out and actively campaigned for the fight on Twitter and my biggest thing is - if you want to call a guy out and you start getting fans into it and they think that I'm running from you. I literally just googled the guy to see who he was. It gets to a point where I'm like, if you want to fight so bad, we'll make it happen. If the people on Twitter want to see it and I'm sure other fans at home want to see it, then I want to accommodate."
Not to be overlooked, Magalhaes (10-5, 1 NC) is a world champion level jiu-jitsu practitioner that is capable of submitting any 205-pound fighter who walks the planet.
Davis is aware of such facts; however, he wants to remind fans the collision with Magalhaes at the Prudential Center isn't a purely jiu-jitsu match, and Davis is interested in testing his opponent in all areas of mixed martial arts (MMA).
"In jiu-jitsu [a fight with him] wouldn't work out for me; however, this is MMA is it not? This is MMA so we'll see how that works for him."
UFC 159: "Jones vs. Sonnen" goes down from the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., on April 27, 2013. A light heavyweight championship contest serves as the main event of the evening as current titleholder Jon Jones puts his belt on the line for the fifth time against No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen.
