Former Middleweight champion Anderson Silva broken his leg last night in the main event of UFC 168, which took place at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It was awful.

Silva survived a first round assault courtesy of division champion Chris Weidman, who was able to close the distance thanks to a knockdown in the clinch and then worked over the Brazilian with effective ground-and-pound. It was a position that Silva clearly wanted to avoid in the second stanza, so he kept his distance and flung kicks to keep "All American" at bay.

It was a strategy that seemed to work well in their first encounter at UFC 162 this past summer; however, this time around Weidman was ready to defend them better. And it didn't take long to illustrate the effectiveness of his technique, checking a leg kick that ultimately turned Silva's tibia into smithereens.

He writhed in pain on the Octagon canvas as the shocked crowd looked to the big screen in utter shock, and disgust, to confirm in nauseating slow-motion what had just transpired. It was a grotesque scene eerily reminiscent to Corey Hill, who suffered a similar devastating injury back in 2008 that was equally unsettling (see carnage pic here).

Nonetheless, Anderson Silva has now lost two consecutive bouts and probably will not return for a very long time because of the extensive rehabilitation ... if at all.
